Thailand's 'Yellow Shirts' Call For Martial Law

webfact

Recommended Posts

But who's the Martial?

the yellows are the martiasl .it seems.

abhisit is their puppet,it seems too. they are telling him what to do.

besides, they own most of the shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, blah, blah, blah nearby.

they are hurting now , but they forget they still have not paid up for the damages to the farangs holidays ruined by them at the airport last time they the yellows took over the airport.

yes, abhisit should impose martial law for them and allow them to reopen their shopping malls.

they own thailand, again, it seems.

so amazing!!!!! :):D :D :D :D :D :D

hi there . . .anyone has good idea how 'martial law' could work ? 'internal security act' did nothing,

'state of emergency' turned into 'sate of no law', dispersal was a show of 'water melon' army !!

It won't work because Army and Thai Police are both very divided and marching left and right. Or at least hotheads from both sides are making things very difficult. One captain shouting this and another one shouting that. Otherwise there would have been effective crackdown already.

Hopefully it won't go to the next level, raiding of army barracks for weapons by both sides. That is what happened in Yugoslavia early 90's...

I don't see any pragmatic benefit of 'martial law', perhaps it is too late. it just complicates the issues further with another label !

the country is now not on the hand of PM ( sorry to say that ), neither on the hand of red-shirt ( whom prepared what will happen ) ! the army is the center of momentum, either they re-united and they clean up the mess, or they go further apart then likely become a coup.

further it drags, more likely move into the formation of civil conflict. that is SAD !

Latest news.

The crackdown is very likely because of rumors that the government has got evidence that the red shirts threatened the life of His Majesty the King, which you know it's not a joke here in Thailand. Let's see for the real news and what's going to happen.

How about a source before you print such things.

News or rumour, first it says news and then rumour :D

CONFIRMED!

POOT LERN LERN :D OF THE YEAR! :D

OH SORI, IN ENGLISH IT MEANS ...............,

OH SORI AGAIN, FORGOT WHAT IT MEANS.

WILL CONFIRM AND REVERT.

A THOUSAND APOLOGIES. :)

Martial law won't mean a thing unless it's enforced. Unfortunately many of the existing laws have been repeatedly violated with no consequences. This will only encourage other groups to take the law into their own hands. It's a shame.

I am now watching ThaiTV (channel 11, I think). I am fluent in Thai. The program is DIRECTLY linking Chavalit to Taksin and the red shirts.

It is really an incredible program...

That's hardly news. Seh Daeng did the same. I guess the government directly calling a former general and PM subversive doesn't happen every day though.

the red shirts don't have toraid the army barracks.

their people are the soldiers with the ammos and guns already. being mostly poor, unlike the rich yellows, the reds could not afford buy thier way out of the armies for their children and so they are the army now.

let's see if the yellow rich ones will buy or steal the ammos and guns from them.

it may turn out to be a bit like yugoslavia in the early 90's, but not quite. :)

:) Set in the watercannons, use really heavy equipment from the firebrigades. Splash away the barricades and the demonstrators. After a day or two with the biggest Songkranparty in history the problems will be solved.

be sure the water canons splashes are red and yellow ink or paint so that it can help the soldiers to target whichever colors they choose to shoot at. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D:cheesy::clap2:

So after 7 weeks of this.....two dozen threads, thousands of posts we have come to the conclusion that........

Abhisit should dissolve parliment

A military coup would be good

The army should just kill everybody

The army should do nothing--the reds will eventually leave.

Redshirts are all just terrorists

Yellowshirts are just terrorists

All other shirts are just terrorists but could be on either side

Guys in black are terrorists but are really red terrorists.

Yellowshirts occupancy of the airport was a bad thing

Redshirts coming to BKK is a bad thing---really bad...worse than anything a yellow could do...but they are not really smart like the Yellows.

The Government is incompetent

The army and police are incompetent

The Reds (or blacks) fired first

The army fired first

Reds are all getting paid on a scale from 300 baht a day to 2000 baht a day or more...they only protest for money...not like yellows who do it for love of Thailand.

The Reds do not get paid but the yellows do.

We know for sure the army and police get paid---oh government too--and way better pay scales.

The Reds fired grenades at the train

The train driver says he saw the grenades coming from a totally different direction to where the reds were....oops just ignore that, eyewitness reports are invalid.

Farangs know things about the reds and their leaderships thoughts that they don't even know themselves...Farangs just KNOW these things....

Farangs know far more about everything in Thailand than any Thai person could possibly know... even ex bus drivers from Liverpool are highly educated in these matters.

If Farangs were running things here this would never have happened...peace and tranquility reign in all Faranglands.

Rice growers are just stupid...actually morons, idiots..and of course terrorists.

In order to know what Thailands population really wants you have to be Farang....and preferably not have spent too much time in Thailand to get confused by actually meeting a lot of Thais.

Tanks and Blackhawkes are the best way to do crowd control.

This would never happen in the USA....we would have shot all of them by day 2.

This would never happen in the UK....we know how to deal with things like this.....we negotiated a deal with the IRA...and it only required 30 years and 4,000 or so deaths...

we don't mess around.

If the reds win, Thaksin will be dictator for life...and he will kick out all foreigners.....within 30 days!!!!

Thaksin flew to Finland with 114 cases of cash....one of our members figured out how much cash you can carry in 114 large suitcases and trunks....without knowing

the the sizes of the containers, the currency, or note denominations...(This report is on another thread from a couple of days ago) Now that's talent for you.

Perhaps if we continue for another 7 weeks and another 20,000 posts at least some of us will figure out that we don't know what the hel_l we are talking about..... :)

In the name of Buddha! I do believe you've covered it all.

Thai have a very unique culture, and the issues must be resolved in the Thai ways ( but really I don't know ) !!

it won’t happen like the Yugoslavia in the early 90's, neither like the Korean students protest in early 80’s, nor like the Tinnanman protest in '89 in Beijing.

Thai is well known on ‘non-violent coups’ as short term ' stop-gap' solution. already numbers of them in last few decades !

The whole concept of the Red shirts being a democratic majority seems to be in question after a Khon Kaen Uni study found that approx 50% of KK residents support the reds, and 50% do not want a house dissolution. This seems to defeat any claim of majority, if they can't achieve it in their heartland, how can they claim it for the country as a whole? This supports evidence given by myself and others, that there is a lack of overt support for the reds in the area.

As this protest continues, tourism figures will continue to drop, leading to a reduction in both income and taxes collected. If the UDD's policies are real, and not a facade for the return of Thaksin, they are self-defeating. Less taxes directly affects the money that can be spent to improve the infrastructure of Isaan. As most of the tax collected comes from the cities anyway, it is churlish to expect an even larger proportion when you are the one reducing the funds available.

Many people in BKK must be angry that their lives are being disrupted; I certainly would be. What if they decide to boycott Isaan produce? It doesn't have to be a total boycott, just a preferential purchasing of southern products when they are available. And it wouldn't take a large percentage of BKK residents to make a noticeable difference. A non-violent way of saying "F.U. very much!"

I would also like to comment on the idea that the PAD has little respect for the voters of Isaan. When Isaanites allow their vote to be bought by the highest bidder, how much respect are they showing for their vote and their country? Where is democracy when candidates are afraid to campaign?

Some very good points, OzMick. Suggest everyone take a look at Pasuk Pongpaichit's recent analysis of the root causes here : http://tinyurl.com/26rfpe7 You may recall that she and Chris Baker wrote an excellent, and far from flattering book about Thaksin.

The big problem with her recommendations is the word "tax". Thailand, she believes, needs to raise more direct taxes (and not have them disappear into politicians' and bureaucrats' pockets). Indirect taxes, such as VAT, have a greater impact on the poor than they do on the wealthy. But no one in the elite/PAD is going to support more taxation, particularly direct taxation on their income and gains. I'll bet that goes for the leaders of Peua Thai and the darling Thaksin, too.

As many people have pointed out here, there's a dearth of honest politicians in Thailand. This applies to a lot of other countries, let's face it, but realistically, can anyone stomach the thought of the country being run by the political throwbacks currently heading PTP?

Surely even Abhisit - castigated by some on this forum as weak, ineffective and a poodle for the elite (I don't happen to agree with this view - I think he and Anupong are trying very hard not to instigate the slaughter of hundreds of people, whatever their shirt colour) would be better than a return to rule by these dinosaurs with their endless appetites and their usually pathetic inability and unwillingness to understand, let alone tackle, Thailand's economic woes.

Here are some numbers to ponder (from Wiki): In 2008 agriculture accounted for just 8.4% of GDP, yet employed 49% of the workforce. Industry and manufacturing accounted for 43.9% of gross domestic product (GDP) but employed only 14% of the workforce. (Tourism accounts for just 6% of GDP, so it's not that significant.)

And from The Nation (Nov last year): "A simple way to measure income inequality is to estimate the gap between the top fifth and bottom fifth of the population. In countries like Sweden and Japan, where people value the advantages of living in a relatively equal society, the difference is 3 to 5 times. In Europe and North America, it's 5 to 8 times. Among Thailand's Asian neighbours, it's 9 to 12 times. In Thailand, it's 13 to 15 times."

And yes, the govt/army could kick all the Red Shirts out of Bkk (if they stopped worrying about the lives that would be lost). But does anyone think that would fix anything for more than five minutes? Thaksin (whatever his faults, and they were legion) raised expectations of a fairer, more equitable society. That genie's out of the bottle and won't go back in.

There is something badly wrong with those income inequality figures, and urging the government to "send the peasants back to the fields" is not the answer. But neither, I believe, is mob rule.

What's needed, maybe, is an honest broker trusted by all to arbitrate and take the heat out of the situation to the point where the two sides (or three, or 10 or 20), can talk without feeling they have to carry M-79s to the meeting.

Who that arbitrator is, I have no idea. Suggestions? Please, not Che Guevara.

Great post!

I think it's O.K. to quote Pasuk on T.V.? I want to do so because I find her recommendations to be right to the point of the current problems:

"For example, reform taxation. At present the taxation system is too reliant on value-added and other indirect taxes, which fall heavily on the less well to do, but favor the rich, making the income gap worsen, and making the poor subsidizing the rich. We should make sure a greater proportion of government revenues come from direct taxes, on income, capital gain, property, and inheritance."

Let the tea bag supporters of the Red shirts affirm that one!

[Edit] I would add the genesis of the current conflict is in large part that a large part of the revenues of the State are illegitimately used for the purchase of patronage and private plunder rather than the provision of services.

While I don't agree with everything posted here, at least there were some very good points made! I wish there were more posts on TV with some common sense, rather than sensationalism, and immature rants! The good old boy network here in Thailand is deep and divided. Newin was the deciding factor in the current coalition that backed the current government. Where is Newin from? Buriram , the "redshirt" issan. Where was Thaksin from and where did he spend the most government money on his cronies building subways to nowhere, and other "developments?" Chang Mai? Oh, then there was the wonderful new BKK Airport. Have you gotten off the plane there and tried to use the public toilets? They are big enough for 5 or 6 people. Well planned! As well as all the payoffs and corruption involved. Hmm, wonder why the "yellow shirts" targeted the airports... Plus the "Ample Rich" corp set up offshore by Thaksin and his family to avoid Thai taxation. Ah yes, a man of the people... The people whose vote and cronyism his money still buys!

It is really an incredible program...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't former-PM Chavalit now chairing PTP, who are Thaksin's current political-party, or what remains of it ? And he was also named as, but shortly afterwards vehemently denied being, the Supreme Commander of the new 'Peoples Army of Thailand' ?

So what's so new, about linking Chavalit to the Red-Shirts & Thaksin ? He's the boss of the political-arm, and they're the street-protest & thug-brigade, of the same broad organisation (sole-proprietor DL).

They for one won't be taken hostage by untrained reddies.

You are right. They won't be taken hostage cuz they'll raise the white flag and call the U.S. to get them out of the shit as usual.

:D

the usa might do that , i.e. if they have forgotten the mess the french left behind for them in the vietnam war when they screwed up the whole french indo-china in the past. :D

I hope they do not run out of colors. Now we got Reds-which-wear-anything-but-reds mingling with the Multicolored shirts? How do you separate Multicolor Green from Red Green? Is there some kind of secret handshake? Can you wear blue shoes with a red shirt? Or green tie with red jacket? Oh, that would be 70's! Is the color pink already taken by some United Group Against Fascism, Nazi Ponies and Evil Ghosts?

the thai ghost festival is round the corners.

ghosts are mostly color=blind.

the colors don't really matter now.

the ghosts don't care two hoots whether you are a neo-nazis or what -have-you.

just the same, they will devour anyone who is fodder for them. :)

so the aging yellow generals and such will just carry out their "duties" to the thai nation,as they see fit. :D .

This is what I find unbelievable... Spoken Sunday, taped Saturday, about the April 10 riot, where the army's soldiers were being fired upon... by other soldiers, both retired and active:

"Anupong said he had never imagined someone would be that cruel to fire lethal weapons at people."

What planet is this guy FROM??? And he's the head of the Army, in charge of making decisions to end this madness???

Not a pretty picture.

I guess PAD's the only guys willing to take action, since neither the police nor the army seem willing to back the government.

Un-f'ing-believable.

Amazing Thailand.

Best post ever in the history of TV.

Im glad this is the first page and post I looked at on this thread.

Absolutely spot on........ :D

I just heard that there have been several cases of H1N1 in the Red Shirt enclave! Could it be that this once feared disease is the answer to the whole problem! Could they all be sent home because of fear of an epidemic there!?

Would be an amazing end to an tricky situation (even if only a temporary one).

Thousands of people living in close quarters without proper sanitation. They'll be lucky if the flu is the worst thing that spreads.

an epidemic is looming all over bangkok.

the four horsemen of the apocalypse are delivering it post haste via ups and hdl :D

Castles, Kings and kingdoms have been lost because

contagion is stronger than the greatest princeling

an aids or hiv+ like scourge can help immeasurably now, especially with the rich yellow trying to punish the people of isaan by dumping their mia nois (who are mostly from the red camps) to the thai nation. (other threads in tv refers).

princelings and such will then will find themselves leveled by this contagion then along with those who they oppose.
