Surround Sound From Truevision Satellite Receiver

Featured Replies

Hi, I recently installed an AV receiver which is capable of simulating 5.1 surround sound from stereo signal using dolby prologic II or DTS Neo 6. However, when I connect my Truevision box using the stereo cable I only get sound through the centre channel. Is this a problem with the satellite receiver? I can get DPLII to work with other sources so it is not a problem with the AV receiver.

Is there any other alternatives to the standard Truevison box that can provide digital out connection? I notice there is a PVR set top box with component and S/PDIF connections but this would cost 15,000 Baht!!

I don't want to go down the HD set top box as I rarely watch the movie channels (too censored!) so don't want to pay the extra subscription charge. TIA.

I experienced this problem a while back. It all comes down to the poor quality audio and picture quality supplied by True. You have a few of options. Firstly your receiver or surround sound controller needs to have simulated multi channel audio, this will output the sound through all 5.1 channels. Not as good as proper 5.1, but better than DPL11, NEO 6 which do not work at all on True's audio signal. The other option is going HD, but you've already indicated that you do not want to go that way. Alternatively you can download all the programs that you want to watch this method will ensure that both DPL11, Neo 6 etc will work with the equipment that you already have.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Ian. I was hoping it was just a problem with the box. I don't like the simulated surround sound as you get speech from the rear speakers which is quite distracting (I assume this is what you mean - I am using a Onkyo SR-707 receiver BTW). I may just get the HD box and pay the extra subscription charge per month, will be cheaper than buying the PVR box. I have downloaded a few programs such as Amazing Race and they do work with DPLII but it is a bit of a hassle. Thanks again.

No problem Scott, I'm glad that I was able to offer you some advice. I know what you mean about the speech coming out of the rear speakers in "Multi channel surround" mode, it doesn't cut it for me either! I do a lot of downloading, and yes it is a bit of a hassle, however if you have a good(quick) internet connection it can be quite rewarding. I am trying to decide whether it is worth investing in True Visions HD. I cant get over the amount of censorship on the analogue "Farang" movie channels, I suppose it will be the same on HD. And if that is the case I don't think it will be worth it. I am currently watching "The Pacific" In HD downloaded from the web. This is also showing on the HBO analogue channel but censorship has spoilt it as it has removed a lot of the reality of the program.

All the best
