Hello

My husband and I would like to adopt children in Thailand, we are live in Phuket. I am trying to get a list together of orphanages in Thailand to visit. If you know of any orphanages please could you send me details. It would be much appreciated.

Thankyou

It might be wise to consider first if you want an international adoption or not. An international adoption will be recognized by your own country, but has to comply with both your own national law and Thai law. A Thai adoption will only have to comply with Thai law, but will not be recognized by your own country, which might be important if you ever want to move back to your own country.

In the pinned section about Thai family law in this forum you can also find an article about adoption.

Thankyou, I did not know that, I don't intend on returning back to Australia but you can never say never and knowing they did not recognise the adoption would be a problem if I returned at some point.

Thankyou

The one we visit and donate to every year is called Phayathai Babies Home in Pakkret (a suburb in the northwest of Bangkok).

It is a great place to visit, and we always bring boxes of supplies and food for the children when we go. Cash is also graciously accepted. They will mail you a receipt for tax purposes.

I would definitely recommend you listen to the advice of other posters though and check with an international adoption firm if neither you nor your spouse is a Thai national and you feel strongly you want to pursue this route. However, there is nothing wrong with visiting some orphanages first and seeing if there is anyone you feel a connection with. The children are always happy to have visitors, and it is a great way to brighten your day.

We are also looking into adopting and do not know where to start... if u get any infomation on ur side do share with me

There is alot of information in English on the web on how to do an intercountry adoption. There is very little on how to do it if you are married to a Thai national. My recommendation is to get a Thai lawyer to help you through this process. You can do it yourself, but having someone else to handle the legwork always makes things easier.

One thing I can tell you is you will need to start the process at the Child Adoption Center at the DSDW in your province (Department of Social Development and Welfare). You can find information here:

http://www.dsdw.in.th/index.php

In my experience the English language option on this website doesn't work, so you'll want to have your Thai husband do the research unless your Thai is fairly good.

There is also some good information here, although again it is largely geared towards intercountry adoption:

If you can read Thai, I would suggest searching on the term:

รับบุตรบุญธรรม

The results returned here will be almost entirely geared towards Thai nationals, which will be much closer to what you need given your husband is Thai.

You will probably also want to check out this page. It has some very useful information on how to get started and what to expect when adopting from inside Thailand.

I admire anybody who takes this route and provises a home, parents, love and stability for orphaned or neglected children.

Many years ago I was lucky enough to be allowed to adopt a Thai youngster, and it changed his and my life for the better in many wonderful ways. He is now an adult, a specialist teacher, about to start his masters degree, married to a delightful Thai lady and they have a young daughter who is now the centre of my life and we are a very close family.

It was tough but I agree and totally respect the need for the relevant authorities to make very careful and detailed checks that the prospective parent(s) are suitable in every way.

Hang in there, it's worth the slog and good luck.

Just to add some up-to-date information. DSDW did not accept any new adoption applications in 2010 and have announced they may not accept any in 2011 either. Their reasoning is that they have a large backlog of waiting families and don't want to take any new applications at this time. Back in Jan 2010 the backlog was rumoured to be between 800-1,000 waiting families.
