churchill Posted April 29, 2010 Share Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) A young man is fighting for his life thousands of miles from home after being struck down by a mystery illness on the holiday of a lifetime. Gus Golding, 21, is in a critical condition in hospital in Thailand after suddenly falling ill while on holiday with girlfriend Natalie Evans. Miss Evans bought the trip of a lifetime for Mr Golding as a present for his 21st birthday in February. Mr Golding, of Brunswick Road, Hove, started feeling unwell the day after the couple arrived on the Koh Samui island on April 15. After four days of fever and coughing up blood the couple decided he needed urgent medical help. Mr Golding has now been in a medically induced coma in a Bankok hospital for seven days. Miss Evans, also 21, had to fly home yesterday to find the money to pay for his treatment, as their insurance will not cover them because Mr Golding suffers from asthma. Describing her desperate fight to help her boyfriend of four years recover, Miss Evans, said: “He has been in hospital seven days now and they are still trying to work out what’s wrong with him. “He’s in a critical condition and needs a machine to breathe. “They thought he had pneumonia to start with. Now they think it might be a condition called churg strauss vasculitis (COR) which is a disease of the blood that causes the lungs to fail. “Once they know what it is they might be able to start getting him better.” Mr Golding, a student at City College Brighton and Hove, briefly regained conscious from his seven-day coma, only to tell his girlfriend that he was terrified about being able to hear everything around him. Fighting back tears Miss Evans told The Argus: “He has been sedated to keep him in a coma. They tried to lower the sedative levels and take away his paralysation. He was able to open his eyes and talk a bit. “He said he knew what was going on, but is paralysed and can’t do anything about it. He was really distressed about that.” Miss Evans said she fears the medical bills will run into hundreds of thousands of pounds as doctors were flown by private jet to the remote island to care for Mr Golding. Desperate for help paying for his treatment she has set up a bank account so friends and family can help with donations. goldfinger Posted May 2, 2010 Share Posted May 2, 2010 first they reported, he stays on Samui in a "Bangkok hospital", and doctor(s)) were coming with Private jets to the "remote island" in another report from 1.May, they say, he stayed in Bangkok in a hospital, where they kept him in a coma. Serious business, Nigerian president has been in coma for 1 year, the Germans and the Saudis on his case were equally useless. Well the local boys that worked on him thought he had a stubborn asthma and gave him everything in their pharmacy. Best of luck to your boyfriend and you.Better make arrangements for an air ambulance to take him home where he can be treated under NHS. Out here the bills will just mount by the seconds. samuibeachcomber Posted May 5, 2010 Share Posted May 5, 2010 If he only had travel insurance,my understanding is they will only usually pay(if they are going to) on return to country of origin and supply them with receipts.I may be wrong.I think travel insurance is not worth the paper its printed on,is usually very cheap and of course is only valid for the holiday dates(departure and return). It certainly is a lesson to be learnt,and maybe the only true health insurance to have is annual private health cover that includes validity while traveling overseas.
