Its time for my wife to get her medical exam in Bangkok for her US immigrant visa She's supposed to bring her vaccination record in but doesn't have one. Evidently, while the government school she attended as child provided the full barrage of shots, they didn't keep records of who got what and neither did her family.

The bottom line is, she has to get the shots again. However, the hospitals that are granted permission by the US embassy to do the exam charge an arm and a leg so we want to find out which vaccinations they want (they told us there are three but not which ones) and get them at a cheaper hospital. Then we'll just bring in the record from that hospital and submit it for the exam.

So, does anyone know which vaccinations she'll need?

Isn't Google wonderful? If you check here, you can see the list: USCIS Medical Exam Page

But I'll list it here for you.

What are the vaccination requirements?

You should have vaccinations for:

    * Mumps

    * Measles

    * Rubella

    * Polio

    * Tetanus

    * Diphtheria toxoids

    * Pertussis

    * Influenza type B

    * Hepatitis B

If you are unable to submit all your vaccination records at the time of the exam, or if you have never had certain vaccines, the Civil Surgeon or Panel Physician can administer them to you.

Important: Do not try to fulfill your vaccination requirements before you meet with the Panel Physician or Civil Surgeon, in case it is not medically appropriate for you to have one or more of the required vaccines.

My wife was in the same position as yours, but I read this last statement and decided it was best for her simply to get them done with her exam. There were one or two vaccinations that she did not have to get because she was too old, but I can't remember which ones.

Thanks daveh

Do you remember about how much that cost you and which vaccines they gave your wife? Was that in Bangkok?

In fact they can test for immunity to certain diseases but its probably easier and cheaper for them just to re-administer the vaccines.

It seems like any doctor would be able to determine which vaccines are medically appropriate so I don't really understand why they would try to discourage people from fulfilling the requirements beforehand , unless it's about the $.

My wife went to Bumrungrad hospital in BKK. I wasn't with her, but she claims it was between 2000 and 3000 baht for the entire medical check. Considering the total cost of moving her from Thailand to America, it was such a minor cost that I've forgotten about it.

yabadaba,

My wife also had her Medical Exam performed at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok. I forget which, but she had 2 shots given to her and total cost was about 2,500 Baht (this was in Oct 2004)

Per US Embassy Website, you can only go to the approved hospitals listed in the following link:

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/services/visa/BKK%20Doctors.pdf

I am uncertain if vaccinations are to be performed ONLY by those hospitals listed or you can get them done else where, might want to call the hospital to find out, but I AM for sure the medical needs to get done using one from the list. My wife went to the hospital about 9am and it took about 2 to 2.5 hours to complete.

Hope this information helps,

regards,
