Travel Insurance For Thailand?

Featured Replies

hi there,

wanted to post this in the insurance section however read that it's for insurance within Thailand.

basically i'm coming to bangkok in just over a week and need travel insurance. I'm gonna be staying for about 100 days which rules out one insurance on thaivisa (the other one was a bit expensive for this long).

i'm just wondering if anyone is in the same boat as me needing travel insurance that has contacted any companies lately? I did contact one company before who said they would provide cover, however that was about 2 weeks ago before it got a bit more serious here.

i've not had too much time to ask for quotes but hopefully if anyone can give me an idea of what companies will provide cover that would be great.

thanks

Do you want travel insurance that will provide cover for delayed and cancelled flights?

Or are you after medical cover?

Or both?

Insurance cover is being declined by most travel companies due to the ongoing problems in Thailand and rightly so.

Would you issue travel insurance to someone heading into a war zone?

Put on a sensible head and seek out a safer destination.

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Summary (you should be aware that acts of violence or sabotage might be staged outside the red shirt protest area).

The overall level of the advice has not changed; we advise against all travel to specific parts of Thailand.

We advise against all but essential travel to other specific parts of Thailand, including Bangkok.

The Thai Government has decided not to impose a curfew on certain parts of Bangkok. If a curfew is announced, details will be included in our travel advice as soon as possible. In the meantime, please monitor local media.

It mentions "advise against all travel to specific parts "...which is vague and does not completely null TI,on the other hand they obviously havnt said anything about the TG latest CURFEW...which..??? :)

Today of course being a Sunday the boys and girls of the FO will be at home or in their locals pubs for a spot of lunch and a swally....

Good Heavens old chap...it is the Weekendafter all.........init

Last year during the airport takeover- didn't the foreign office advise against all but essential travel to thailand?

was hardly chaos back then. I know this time is on a different level - however i'm not the kind of guy who wakes up in the morning thinking of nothing better to do but mingling with protesters.

Its simple. And not simple. Contrary to what you read above most travel insurance still available for LOS. The warning level is against "all but essential travel" most insurance policies allow this but stop at "all travel". These are legal definitions. Up to you if anything happens to prove your journey was essential. Personally although I could purchase a policy now as many policies just ask you for a general area I think you could be on shaky grounds if you need to claim.

I think anyone would have to be pretty foolish to travel intending to stay in Bangkok over the next few days. The situation is very fluid with the potential to explode in other areas. Whilst I can understand why anyone in Bangkok would be a little reluctant to pack up and leave right now, that's very different to wanting to travel there.

Whole thing might become academic anyway. Every chance European airlines might be canceling flights very soon, even if the airport remains secure the crews still have to exit the airport to meet flight regs on rest periods etc and they may well decide they would prefer not to. Their contracts have clauses that permit them to decline to travel to destinations in such circumstances.

Travel Insurance is available - An example being WorldNomads - Who are not only providing insurance but also have posted information on their website how the political demonstrations/civil unrest impacts their insurance policies. http://journals.worldnomads.com/safetyhub/post/57228.aspx

No need to visit the TV Insurance Forum which has nothing to do with providing you anything but and opportunity to be the target of advertising.

Stick with the General Forum, people around here like helping out for free.

You could take the risk on the travel insurance, after all if the flights are cancelled they will still honour the tickets at a later date and you still won't be able to get here with another carrier anyway.

And for the medical insurance buy it in Thailand when you arrive, or have someone arrange it for you prior to your arrival.

If you still intend to come to Thailand, I would change your plans to stay in Bangkok. Their are many other areas in Thailand that are unaffected. Listen to your government. Their are many travel warnings, and this is only going to get worse.
