there's beena few posts on this but still not all that clear..

would like to import a land rover into thailand.

i've heard that if it's been in my thai wife's name for 18 months? then we might be able avoid any tax. Anyone know any more detail on this? i'm not sure but the website that i just looked at seemed to say that she needed to have been living in the UK for those 18 months. We were hoping to just transfer ownership and wait 18 months and then bring it over to thailand.

any one done this? can any one help?

cheers

Broadly I think that's correct...but I think your wife would have to have been a bona fide student for that period of time in the country from which the land rover is imported. Otherwise, you're looking at taxes totalling over 250%...

Others may have a different view but this is my understanding...

Sorry....

Forget it, absolutely forget it while your sane. I gave the same advice to a married(to a Thai) American ast November. He imported a 10 year old Merc from Oregon. After weeks at Customs Department at MuangThongThai he finally gave up a couple of weeks ago. It is the most corrupt department in Thailand, if not the most corrupt on the planet. The holding fees alone now are in the hundreds of thousands. Guess who needs to sign, the minister, guess what, she's never there. Guess what, every man and his dog is on the take from the holding companies. Fees and charges hidden behind smoke and mirrors. Don't listen to my advice if you like, but don't say you haven't been warned.
