100,000 on their best day (when it WAS peaceful).

10,000 on most days after April 10 (after people saw the 'black shirts' and grenades used by the reds)

3,000 on their last day.

Of a country of 65,000,000 people, these are all VERY small numbers.

Thailand's conflict spreads to rural northeast

BANGKOK (AFP) -- Four provincial halls in Thailand's northeast, the heartland of anti-government protesters, have been torched as authorities struggle to halt violence in Bangkok from spreading, an official said Thursday.

"Red Shirts" campaigners in those areas were defying a state of a emergency that has been declared in 23 provinces as well as the capital Bangkok, said Manit Wattansen, permanent secretary at the interior ministry.

"Fire gutted four provincial halls almost simultaneously early Wednesday afternoon including in Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchthani," Manit told AFP.

He said that damage to the buildings had been significant, ranging from 20 to 40 percent of the infrastructure. The halls house the offices of the provincial governors as well as agencies like taxation and education.

"Authorities can control the situation to some extent, but there are still protests in Lampang and Chiang Mai," he said referring to northern towns.

A curfew on Bangkok, aimed at containing enraged protesters who went on the rampage when their rally base was shut down, was extended Wednesday to cover 23 provinces.

The extension mainly covered the protesters' heartland in the north and northeast of the kingdom, which has a total of 76 provinces.

In Udon Thani, thousands of protesters besieged the provincial hall before setting it ablaze, destroying parts of the ground floor.

There are fears that the overwhelming offensive against the Reds, who had occupied Bangkok's main shopping district for six weeks, will trigger trouble in the rest of the country.

Thailand is largely split between the Reds, whose supporters are mainly rural and urban poor, and the rival Yellows who are pro-establishment and detest the Reds' hero, ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a 2006 coup.

I was trying to find something on line, but couldn't. For what I know right now it's:

Bangkok with all its provinces, Korat (Nakhon Ratchatani), Sisaket, Ubon Ratchatani, Kon Kaen,

Maha Salakam, Roi Et, will update this as soon as possible.

Before this I thought my concept of the thai police was firmly anchored at the rocky bottom, but the things I've seen the last days plunged it down to the Earth's molten core.

For example yesterday, Asoke/Sukumvit intersection, right in front of the police kiosk in the corner one or two red shirt start piling tires and sticks to block traffic, there are three or four policemen standing right there, just watching and moving the traffic around the small burning barricade. No attempt whatsoever to stop them. Completely useless, they leave us at the mercy of any thug, anarchist or "protester" on the streets.

Then at Kohn Kaen, the same a police line standing idly while rioters burn down the government house, disgusting.

By the way, the title is wrong, it should be Northeast protests begin targeting their own hometowns. This protests wasn't initiated in Bangkok.

Yes he is - Bloop seems to be under the illusion that the 35% of the votes that the reds got in the last election is 'the will of the people' but discounts the 65% that didn't vote red.
