Thai Court Approves Arrest Warrant Against Thaksin On Terrorism Charge

webfact

Recommended Posts

The other English language newspaper notes that the court hearing was held behind closed doors and no one, not even reporters were allowed in to witness proceedings. A fact that the Nation failed to mention in it's report.

I suspect other countries will just see this warrant as the product of a kangaroo court and will simply ignore it. As Abhist says, it is just an internal matter after all.

Court hearing? Did you actually read that? It wasn't a court hearing, it was a police investigation and as such was conducted in private as are most police investigations in most countries and most people around the world understand that.

But thanks for trying to participate in the discussion, anyway.

As I have statedmany times before, the thai goverment doesn´t want him back in Thailand. They just try to make it as uncomfortable for him as possible.

Wouldn't he be safer in Thailand, because the police here seem to ignore arrest warrants. Actually they seem to ignore most things except a car/mc which can bring them Bt200 bribe. What an outfit.

And as if the international community will take notice of some kangaroo court from a 3rd world banana republic… just more hot air and BS as usual. :)

How wrong you are , He is on terrorism charges I would say he will be arrested in days not months.

I hope you are right but the arrest warant isn't issued by an international court is it?

Don't you think the international community has to recognize the arrest warrant first?

I really don't know how long that would take but now all countries will be aware of his charges and I would think none of them would want to have him on their soil now.

Is he guilty? Can they prove it?

Is he guilty? Can they prove it?

For them to be able to extradite him, they don't need to prove that he is guilty. The Thai police would probably need to show that they have sufficient evidence to charge him. The foreign court would then weigh everything up and decide if it is a solid case, and maybe if he could receive a fair trial before they decide to extradite him.

Even if they don't extradite him, it's possible that the country might ban him from entering, which I think is the aim - not to get him back here, but to make it difficult for him to go anywhere.

Do they want a trial and to have him locked up in Thailand? Given the "holiday camp" treatment of the other red leaders, Thaksin would live very comfortably and provide a focal point from which to direct his attacks on the government.

Cancel speech, Thaksin told

(PARIS) FRANCE said on Tuesday it had persuaded Thailand's ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to abandon a speech in Paris on the Thai political crisis, but the event's organisers insisted it would go ahead.

"Thaksin Shinawatra assured us he would do what was asked," foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told reporters, referring to French officials' demands last week that he should not speak in Paris on May 31 as planned.

Mr Valero said the address to journalists, organised by a little-known think tank called the Centre of Political and Foreign Affairs, "was no longer planned" and Thaksin "told us he would not come back" to France.

But the head of the group of organising the speech, Fabien Baussart, told AFP: 'This event is still scheduled and it will take place whether the foreign ministry wants it to or not.'

France had earlier asked Thaksin to refrain from speaking in public during his private visit to France because of the tense situation in Thailand, where political instability has boiled over into deadly street violence.

A Thai court on Tuesday issued a warrant for Thaksin's arrest on terrorism charges, which carry a maximum penalty of death, over accusations that he has been bankrolling the protests and inciting unrest from overseas.

Mr Valero said France was not currently bound by the warrant. After Thursday's statements, the organisers of the speaking event said Thaksin had temporarily left Paris for London.

some News reports didn't made it into the forum, even when they were from The Nation, so you are maybe not well informed. Please read the article below.

FYI:

Their Majesties sponsor Seh Daeng's funeral

By The Nation

Published on May 18, 2010

Their Majesties the King and Queen will graciously sponsor the funeral of Maj-General Khattiya "Seh Daeng" Sawasdipol who succumbed to brain injuries yesterday morning.

The three-day prayer rites at Sommanas temple are also under Royal patronage. The prayers started yesterday and will continue until tomorrow. The bathing rite held yesterday was attended by a large number of red-shirt supporters as well as his lone daughter Khattiyah and sister Jiaranai Matchakijborribal. The general's wife died several years ago.

Also present were fellow soldiers, including General Pallop Pinmanee, as well as military officers who were Khattiya's classmates in Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School's Class 11.

The suspended Army specialist was pronounced dead at 9.20am in Vajira Hospital, where he was taken on May 14. He was initially admitted to Hua Chiew Hospital after taking a sniper shot to his head on May 13 while giving a press interview near Lumpini Park.

Meanwhile, protesters at the Rajprasong rally site held a ceremony to grieve the general while the red-shirt leaders delivered speeches honouring the man.

Vajira Hospital's director Dr Chaiwan Jaroenchokethawee said there were many complications leading to Khattiya's death apart from his brain injuries. The patient experienced kidney failure and worsening blood-clotting condition early yesterday morning, the doctor said. His heart stopped once and was recuperated after a 55-minute attempt, before it came to a complete halt at 9.20am.

The body later underwent a three-hour autopsy, prompting the waiting red shirts to boo and jeer until Chaiwan explained that all mandatory autopsies took that long.

Nang, 55, a red, said she felt secure everytime she saw Khattiya visiting the protest site. "He was a good person, down-to-earth, and our only hope to protect us. When he is gone we run out of protection. "Why do all red shirts end up like this?"

Another woman, who asked not to be named, said she was sorrowed by his death, because Khattiya was giving his all to his country. She was once photographed with him and signed get-well message the first night he was admitted to the hospital.

Profile :

A Ratchaburi native, Khattiya "Seh Daeng" Sawasdipol was born on June 24, 1951, to Captain Sanit and Sa-ing. He was the eldest and only son among four siblings.

After graduating high school from Sri Wikorn School, he enrolled in Class 11 of Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School and Class 22 of Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy. He also earned three bachelor's degrees, a master's in sociology and environment, and a doctorate in administrative management from a university overseas.

He became a widower after his wife Group Captain Janthra died several years ago. They had one daughter Khattiyah.

Khattiya first served in the political arena as a senior orderly to deputy defence minister and deputy prime minister under the Chatichai Choonhavan government.

He was known for his outspokenness after falling out with former police chief Sant Sarutanont over a land ownership dispute in January 2003 when hundreds of men ransacked a bar near Sukhumvit Soi 10. He later accused Sant of illegally helping policemen, who commanded the men during the melee.

He later went bankrupt after refusing to pay Bt20 million in reparation to Sant, who won a lawsuit he filed against Khattiya in August 2006.

Khattiya later had conflicts with the next police chief, General Seripisut Temiyavej, over the police raid of a gambling den. The police chief later lodged several defamation lawsuits against Khattiya.

He later publicly criticised Army commander General Anupong Paochinda for not taking action against the People's Alliance for Democracy for the seizure of both of Bangkok's airports. He went on to publicly curse Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan over his inaction in many cases of disturbances.

Khattiya founded a political party under his popular name Seh Daeng, but the Election Commission did not approve the name. He waited for two years before withdrawing his request and founding the Khattiya Tham Party.

Save your welcomes for Mr Thaksin when he comes back. From what I have seen today, all this junta grandstanding has done is put him back on the stage with the media printing and reporting his replys to the charges. I have not seen much of the man but today he is everywhere, on every tv channel, every news forum, every newspaper. Many mentions of the coup, Abhisits none electability and the Elite control of media, courts, army and politicians.

It wasn't even a good try, it was just another ill thought out desperate attack on a popular politician.

Welcome to my world

Would that be Planet La La?

So are you working with this 'Human Rights Group' because you have never been able to get a real job? Are you one of these angry drop out student types who never made it so you love to kick the establishment, any establishment? Huddle around a table with other people wearing combat jackets and silly hats planning the next revolution. Citizen burleychassis perhaps, or maybe Comrade is more preferable.

No, not Planet La La, it must be the Red Planet!

I bet with those US gov. mobile recordings they have - yes they can prove it.

Agreed.

He is smart, just smart enough to think he can do something BIG,

but his ego seems to write checks even his billions can't pay.

So he is just smart enough to do something REALLY stupid.

Like think his Pantip Encrypted cell phones are really secure....

No to mention the blatant calls in public for a shopping list filled with

bad stuff for the country. His own mouth will be his undoing,

along with the paper trails he leaves.

The gov. tracked his Temasek money ok. why not all this cash,

hand to hand to hand; digital trails he can't erase.

Shlmazeltop, just because he gets funeral honors as a 'still registered general in the army',

and for his past service to Thailand, doesn't in any way mean his current act

has been condoned by the highest chairas you imply. You also imply all is forgiven,

There has been a dicussion going on in facebook (in Thai) for some time on who Sae Daeng was really working for.

It has been said that he worked as a spy for the US in Vietnam and for Thailand in Cambodia if this is true he has a history.

He was also reported as saying something like: 'when the truth comes out my photo will be in every home in Thailand'

Probably we will never know.

It certainly implies that Thaksin has some justice coming to him.

Not being serving military, it is unlikely to be military justice,

and not being on a field of battle and having 'specifically declared war' on the army,

it doesn't imply the same end as Seh Daeng got.

Not that we have any actual idea who took out Seh Daeng now do we?

One down one to go

One brave soul ends his journey at the hands of another coward. It's an old story.

For all his rebelliousness, Gen Khittaya was loved and well known for his tireless help of the people around him. A friend of mine who knew him very well said "I cannot understand why he gets involved in the causes that he does but he does so with great dedication." He said the only person that ever had any influence on him was his late wife. If she would tell him, "go up stairs and change that dreadful shirt", he was on the stairs in two seconds. His life seemed to change after she passed away, which might provide a clue to how he became involved with the likes of Thaksin.

He will always be remembered as a Thai hero, a status denied to Thaksin inspite of all his billions.

The Sae Daeng article HAS been talked to death here .... Mazeltov's attempt to drag other issues into his death is noted.

Al Jazeera is running a report on Thaksin today because of the arrest warrant for Terrorism charges. They weren't kind and suggested that Thaksin is/will be persona non grata in Western Europe as of now. They made sure to mention that Thaksin is extremely unlikely to be extradited from Montenegro since Montenegro almost never extradites its citizens to foreign soil for trials.

The arrest warrant, if it does nothing else, seems like it will limit the number of countries that will allow Thaksin entry. That means there will be fewer pics in the press showing him shopping in Paris for Louis Vuitton. Those pics were propoganda used to show the reds that he is alive and well and still accepted in the "West". Now it will probably only be Dubai, Montenegro, and small military controlled countries that let him in at all.

I do see we have a new crop of members tossing around Robert Amsterdam's most recent meme ..... sad. Talk about sheep that buy into a PR machine!

Rabo --- Sae daeng might be a hero to some but he was a terrorist and killer as well. There is absolutely no reason to assume the guy that took the shot that was the proximal cause of his death is a coward. Certainly he was less of a coward than a man that ordered the grenade attacks of so many non-combatants. Whoever killed Sae Daeng was one professional military man (not nec. in the employ of the government) taking out the command and control of an illegal militia. Sae daeng expressed respect for the killing of the senior officer on April 10th for exactly that reason.

Kidney failure caused by his brain ceasing to send proper processing messages.

Chantorn, he may have taken a bad path after the passing of his beloved wife,

who seems to have been his grounding, but not being convicted of his latest actions,

and the process of his being removed from the army incomplete, he still was a Thai General,

with a long record of service to his country.

As the song in the movie 'White Christmas' said:

"What do you do with a general, when he's no longer being a general."

OK.

So if Thaksin is shot dead now, perhaps the same new agency would report Thaksin death as "Breathing failure". Also, Thaksin may have taken a bad path after his beloved wife divorce him.

And since Thaksin have been grounding, but not being convicted of his latest actions, and the process of his being convicted of terrorist incomplete, he still was a ex-prime Minister, with a long record of service to his country, and the ONLY PM who completed a term, he should also receive a Royal funeral? :):D :D

Attempting to drag future actions of the Royal Family (or to use past actions to support a political belief) is not a wise course of action. Reporting what they have done or public statements made is one thing but trying to suggest that it "means" something that was not stated is another thing entirely!

Thaksin has been convicted.

The proximal cause of Sae Daeng's death was a bullet to the brain.

cut the word terrorism and replace it with the word "COUP"

As I recall, nobody got hurt in the coup and people were giving soldiers flowers in the street. The yellow shirts didn't hurt anyone in their protest either. How many people have died or been maimed at the hands of the redshirts? How many grenade attacks and shootings?

The comparison of the coup to terrorism is ridiculous, particularly since the coup was partly conducted to avoid violence.

correct! it took 4 years (yes thais are slooowminded) to the people to realize they've been a$$<deleted>**ed.. but once they understood... (see the last 3 months)

incorrect. police officers who dared to attempt to push them away from the prime minister's office compound (august 2008) has been injured (and some hospitals in bangkok refused to heal them)

oh please, be serious, i'm not thai, not even a young boy....

anyway....

WHO'll take seriously an arrest warrant for terrorism issued by a country that repeatedly ignored an international court decision? (see the Preah Vihear Temple dispute)

Thai latest incidence was the reaction tho the Coup. If they people had been prepared as now -the coup would not have been non-violent. Everyone was caught off guard. It has taken the Red idealism years to react to the coup as people would react to any coup in any country. I am not a Thaksin supporter, but I am certainly against military coups. If there was a military coup in your home country do you think there would be flowers in gun barrels ?? Think again. I know that is there was a coups in the USA even against Bush who I desisted, I would take up take up arms and so would millions of others.
