I've just read the raw sewerage topic and it makes me wonder why there are no composting toilets on any of Thailand’s islands.

There seems little or no attempt to establish an eco-friendly attitude amongst the various businesses on Thailand’s many islands or the main land come to that.

There are many toilets systems that use little or no water - such a precious commodity on an overcrowded island. Not only do composting toilets use no water, they actually produce a dry odourless manure that can be used to improve soil quality.

Can you make an exsisting toilet into a compost toilet? I wonder how you would go about that? It's a good idea for all those folks building homes and what not, but maybe expensive?, for bungalow owners that have toilets already attached to their bungalows. Do you know anything about them? I've heard of them, but never used one that I'm aware of.

Essentially a composting toilet is a room with a whole in the roof that your business falls through, so you need some height e.g. a hillside if you are in a bungalow. I'm not an expert on this by any means, but there are many ecologically sound ways of dealing with effluent. Bio-Poo system fits onto ordinary plumbing and requires a relatively small hole in the ground.

I'm not sure of the chemistry behind all this but if you have various kinds of soakaways and septic tanks they actually are quite a good way of dealing with all the crap so to speak. I've been told never to put paper into the loo at my house not just because the pipes can't handle it but because it affects the chemistry going on in there.
