Young detectives to beat Chiang Mai crime

CHIANG MAI: -- Young people in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Mai can now become 'amateur detectives', thanks to a police scheme to enlist children in the fight against crime.

Today the provincial police force launched a training scheme for over 300 boys and girls aged 10-14 years, who will be taught how to provide the police with information on drug trafficking and other crime, and how to help the police prevent crime in their local communities.

During their training, the children will be given basic information on legislation and how to watch out for suspicious behaviours.

Phoom Butdee, an 11 year-old boy from Samoeng district, told reporters that he had signed up for the scheme, as he wanted to join the police force when he left school.

Pol. Maj. Jirut Pornmobon, the provincial police commander, expressed confidence that the scheme would help reduce crime rates in the province

I was just wondering, providing the pre-teens didn't object to others sitting in on their training, that this would be an excellent training opportunity for the farang tourist police volunteers from Pattaya.

As an after thought, I guess that their attendance would hinge on obtaining parental permission slips, same as their younger crime-fighting partners.

Better to put those children in school !

11 years old and be an "informant" against drug traficking ? What a bad dream this country can be sometimes....

Not to be pessimistic, but this has a real potential for abuse, especially if the kid(s) have an 'agenda' ...

That sounds like a dangerous occupation for a child, and could very well cost lives, that's one way to keep them silent.

Not to be outdone by Chiang Mai, Bangkok has started it's own version:

'Spidermen’ hired to net criminals

BANGKOK, June 19, (TNA) – Not everyone wants to be a police informant, but who hasn’t wanted to be Spiderman? And now residents of Bangkok’s Wang Thong Luang district could get their chance, thanks to a scheme by the local police force which aims to crack down on crime committed in tall buildings.

According to police statistics, around 60 percent of crimes committed in the capital are carried out in high-rise apartment blocks and condominiums.

In order to help beat this trend, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pansiri Praphawat launched a volunteer scheme in which apartment and condominium residents will be encouraged to act as ‘spidermen’ to provide the police with information on suspicious behaviour.

Police at Wang Thong Luang station acknowledge that it is often difficult for officers to closely supervise tall buildings, and hope that the scheme will serve to assist the local police force in their duties.
