ญาติโกโหติกา

Featured Replies

In Ms. Beckers Speak like a Thai vol. 2 is the word ญาติโกโหติกา defined

as the relatives. The example given is:

chan mai chai yaat-dti-goo hoo-dti-gaa kawng kun.

meaning: I’m not your dam_n relative.

What part of this implies dam_n? Is ญาติโกโหติกา derogatory by itself? It is not in any of my dictionaries.

This is as far as I could get trying to break it down. TIA for any replies.

ญาติโกโหติกา

ญาติ relatives; relations;

โก elder brother

โหติกา ???

กา crow - kettle - make a mark

Klons,

There seems to be no hint of a negative meaning in the definition in "คำคล้องจอง":

"ญาติโกโหติกา น. คนในวงค์วานที่เป็นญาติพี่น้องกันทั้งทางฝ่ายพ่อและทางฝ่ายแม่"

Matichon dictionary says:

"ญาติโกโหติกา เหล่าเครือญาติ"

In "คลังคำ" อาจารย์ นววรรณ has a bit of a different take:

"(ปาก) ผู้ที่มีเชื่อสายเดียวกันและยัวนับรู้กันได้"

Sorry, I can't find the pejorative implication; might it be contextual?

In normal speech we just use ญาติ. ญาติโกโหติกา used when we want to emphasize that there are lots of them. It usually (not always) imply annoyance.

ถูกหวยทีญาติโกโหติกามากันเต็มไปหมด a lot of relatives showed up when I won a lottery ticket.

ญาติ pronounce like "yad" on it own but yad-ti in ญาติโกโหติกา.

โก elder brother

โก in this sense is actually a loan word from Chinese probably from Cantonese dialect.

It is the most prevalent in south of Thailand where most Cantonese live.
