keo Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Is there a phrase in Thai to describe a sound as being particularly irritating or uncomfortable to listen to? Or is something along the lines of (and please feel free to correct/improve my crude attempt).. เช่นเดียวกับฟังเล็บมือเกากระดานดำ ...likely to be understood/get a laugh? Looking forward to your input... Thanks
anchan42 Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) “ขูดสังกะสี” or noise from scratching the tin roof. You can say เสียงอย่างกับขูดสังกะสี. Some also say เหล็กขูดสังกะสี or แมวขูดสังกะสี If you want to comment someone’s singing ability, you could use เสียงอย่างกับแมวออกลูก = sounded like a cat having kittens. Baa_Mango Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 thats so เจ๋ง the cat thing. Just curious about อย่างกับ.. can you use that in a sensical manner (yes thats not a word) with any comparison ? like saying something smells like poo.. ie กลิ่นอย่างกับขี้ or taste ie กบรสอย่างกับไก่ ?
Peppy Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I think you can use อย่างกับ for any simile-type comparison (that is, comparisons using 'like' or 'as'), not just ones involving the senses. It usually sounds more like ยังกะ in everyday speech.
LazyYogi Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I think I've heard my wife say เสียวฟัน in this type of situation. It's as if the sound is so irritating that it gives you a tooth ache. I guess you've got to think outside the box.
