Esri Map Cannot Be Used With Map Source?

Featured Replies

I have a ver 9 ESRI map, tried to use the mapsource on the computer but couldn't, called ESRI and the technician said that all esri maps are not mapsource friendly, does anybody has any way? When trying to unlock map, it requires 25 characters' password to unlock.

Theres hacked ones out there..

Tho the legit purchased ones cannot be.

Actually it's possible to install the IMG into Mapsource as a map product, no matter if it's a legit or a hacked one. The utility to achieve this is GMapTool, available here:Pliki/Download: GMapTool, Nutrak However, the address search feature of the map would not be functional in Mapsource, although other searches like POIs and cities are possible.

Hi dvpro, I have downloaded the GMap tool, I think this is for joining up maps, and not for the esri map to be shown in the mapsource?

Hi Cobra, here're the steps to generate an installer for Mapsource from compiled IMG:

  1. First you need to download and install GMapTool and cGPSmapper (both are free).
  2. At GMapTool Options page, point to "cgpsmapper.exe" (refer image below).
  3. At Files page add IMG file.
  4. At Split page, browse and select folder to split files to, select "Create: files for Mapsource", tick "Compile preview map", click "Split selected".
  5. IMG should have been successfully split with all necessary files saved at the selected folder (check log for errors, if any).
  6. Browse to split folder and run "install.bat" (and follow the instruction to proceed with installation) to install mapset into Mapsource. Once installed, the folder/files should not be moved/deleted. Later if needs to be uninstalled, run "uninstall.bat".

Note:

  • However, by using this method, "Find Places" feature (in Mapsource) will be disabled, and only "Find Nearest Places" (for POIs) would work when using this mapset.
  • If you are using a locked IMG file (which I assume is associated with a legit unlock code), the same unlock code for device needs to be used in Mapsource to unlock the mapset.

Hi dvpro, thanks for the instructions, btw after joining it up with mapsource, can I plan my route with the computer and transfer my planned routes to the gps?

Yes. MapSource allows you to receive and send Maps, Routes, Waypoints and Tracks from and to your GPS device.

However, it's not advisable to send maps using this mapset in Mapsource (user data such as route is fine).

Hi DVPRO

Worked like a charm for loading SEA NT into mapsource. Have been wrestling with this for awhile. Many thanks.

Cheers

Have tried to load my version 10.1 map into Mapsource using both the GMaptool mentioned above and also using MapSetToolKit mentioned elsewhere. But neither are working for me :-(

Anyone else managed to load the ESRI Thailand Street Map v10 map into MapSource or otherwise get it working on their computer? Would be nice to be able to browse the map using my computer!

What operating system are you using? I have done the above with no problem running Windows XP. If you are running Windows 7, I had to manually enter the registry file settings into the 64 bit section of the registry.

What operating system are you using?

I am using Windows 7.

If you are running Windows 7, I had to manually enter the registry file settings into the 64 bit section of the registry.

What registry setting's did you edit??

I find in the MapSetToolKit it won't import any of the maps and it then complains that level 0 is empty.

In GMapTool it says the map file contains multiple products and doesn't produce the promised .bat file to import the maps into mapsource.

I am not an expert at this and did a lot of trial and error. If I remember correctly I had a similar error message to yours, and I unchecked the box that says "install preview map", or something to that effect. If you do not get the maps converted and the install.bat made, do not worry about the next paragraph because that is not your current problem.

The registry problem only occurred after the maps were made and I ran the install.bat. It installs the new registry files in the tree "software/garmin/mapsource" which is for 32 bit. I had to manually enter the registry files in the "Wow6432Node" tree, manually entering them exactly as the install.bat had done. If you are not familiar with using Regedit and somewhat familiar with the registry directory, I would be very careful.

In GMapTool it says the map file contains multiple products and doesn't produce the promised .bat file to import the maps into mapsource.

Try this:

  1. Add IMG into GMapTool.
  2. At Split Page, select Create: single maps. Specify a fresh empty folder, and then select Split Selected.
  3. At Files page, remove added IMG (from step 1) so that there is no IMG listed there. Next add all files from split folder except MAPSOURC.MPS. At Join page, specify Output File, and tick Set mapset FID, key in 57 for FID, and 1 for PID. Then select Join All.
  4. Finally use this re-packed IMG, instead of the original IMG when splitting using the original instructions posted above.

According to Garmin, the Basecamp program will work with maps installed on a GPS, without having to install them on the PC. Haven't tried it, though.

Thanks a million dvpro. When eventually I got round to trying this it worked great.

Wonderful, so now I can browse the ESRI map on my computer and send routes and way points to Garmin XT running on my phone (Nokia N97). When I try to browse the map on my phone the software crashes, although it is reliable otherwise, so this is just great.

Thanks again,

Jamie
