I email them periodically to see if they have opened any dealers yet. I am interested in the LF200 GY-5. I have gotten some rather cryptic responses as to whether they have dealers yet.

Yes, Lifan is building a dealer network in Thailand relatively quickly, they have the right plan and financial commitment to make even the biggest dealers think about it. Last time I spoke with somebody from Lifan about dealers they suggested that they had currently around 200 dealers in the country.

Lifan opened a new factoring location in Thailand and we soon "hopefully" can even see the benefits of that in the 250cc enduro and motard market.

In Bangkok I have no idea about a dealer, but you can always visit Lifan Bangkok sales office. They located in Rama 2 Rd. Soi Thakam**, and they have a small showroom. If you go on Saturday, you have the best chance to meet a guy who actually can speak English. On other days, it can be difficult as most in the office speak Chinese. O and before anybody ask about the price of the Lifan LF250-B its 76,000 Baht not sure if that is or excluded the 600 Baht registration fee and basic (by law needed) insurance of 145 Baht...So it is possible that it is 76,745 Baht

** Soi Thakam police station, every taxi driver in Bangkok knows Thakam police station... as they are pretty good in giving tickets which need to be paid at the police station...

Been doing a little checking around online today. I'm gathering that the Lifan 250-B is a very close copy of the 250 Yamaha V-twin that used to be called the Virago. Read a number of customer reviews of the 250 Virago and found it is very well liked and in general viewed as a terrific all around bike so long as one doesn't do much interstate cruising on it. Customers say it's even okay on the interstates so long as one keeps one's speed down to 60 miles an hour or less which means in the West, staying way over in the slow traffic lane. From what I have gleaned the Virago 250 V twin exhibits very low vibration levels, it is a lightweight easily managed bike. Many of the customers reviews state the bike is much more fun to drive than much larger motorcycles.

There is some info on the Lifan 250 Bikez at Lifan but this bike is referred to as the Lifan 250 cruiser. I also want to mention that I just went over to the Yamaha web site where I could no longer find 250 c.c. street bikes listed. The 250 Yamaha Virago I have learned today has been renamed the 250 V Star.

I have said before and I'll say it again. From what I've seen, at least in the American market, the large Japanese motorcycle companies have neglected 250-500 c.c. sized bikes that are much better and cheaper all around choices for the average rider than the much larger and more expensive models they hawk. In my opinion this is because their profit margins are much higher on the larger bikes and that such companies are appealing more to the gonads than the common sense of their potential customer base. But back to the Yamaha 250 Virago, and the 250 Lifan-B if it is in fact a close copy. From what I've read the V-twin engine results in a smooth engine for this size of displacement while offering at the same time a lot of usable torque. And as to possibly having to do 60 miles an hour in the slow lane of an American interstate, I'd think this bike might do very well on the slower two lanes that are more typical of Thailand. (60 means cruising easily without laboring the engine, not top end).

On a trip into town(Kanchanaburi) today I popped into one of the local bigger bike dealers who recently had a Lifan dirtbike on display.

When I asked where it had gone they replied they had sent it back as it was impossible to register it for the road.

I for one hope they can get it through the emission regs as it would be nice to hear how it stacks up against more expensive alternatives.

Hi Rich, I saw the LG200GY-5 outside the dealership 4-6 weeks ago but only popped in today. Tardy of me I know.

The dealer said that they were happy with the quality of the bike but being unable to register it at the time meant that they had to send it back.

I guess that if it has now passed all the relevant tests then it is just possible to get it registered.

The dealer pointed me in the direction of another shop that he said had taken Lifan on and I will try and check it out on my next visit into town.

Horsepower is a tricky thing, anyway the Lifan LF250 has about 21 horsepower at the crank and 17 in the rear wheel. This is similar to what a Yamaha V-Star 250 has available.

The thing with a cruiser is not that you need a lot of horsepower to have good machine, it's surely not a race bike. But for cruisers a good amount of torque is always welcome, and on the torque part the Lifan has a good amount if you compare it to other cruisers.

Of course you can always experiment with changing the sprockets to loose some torque to gain some horsepower...

I was a little mystified by some of the horsepower figures I've seen for this bike as well. I've seen from such places as Bikez the Lifan 250-B has around 18.5 which puts it in the same class as the Tiger 250 which although it develops a lot less horsepower than a Ninja 250 (which can possibly do as much as 100 mph top end) gets its power on the low to mid range which makes the bikes much more enjoyable say in city driving. Then I read that the Yamaha V-star gets about 21 horsepower. I wondered where the difference between 18.5 and 21 went. Certainly the only place I'd read that the Lifan 250-B only develops 16 horsepower or even less is here on this board. But last night I finally found more data on such larger Yamaha models as the Yamaha V-star 650, and I was amazed at the low power figures for this bike. Reminded me of the BMW R-65 I once owned which had just 50 horsepower, which was just five more than the Honda CB-450 i owned a few years previously. Well, it might have had just 50 horsepower but that BMW 650 sure drove good in all conditions except for racing or going around corners fast. A friend of mine bought a 500 Ninja and that 500 Ninja was faster than my 650 plus it would go around corners a lot faster. It was a lot of fun to drive. But I seriously doubt that 250 Ninja would be a lot of fun for me to drive here in Pattaya down such streets as 2nd and Beach Roads, Pattaya Road, Pattaya Nua, Pattaya Tai and so on. Sure one can probably get 33 horsepower out of it but that only comes at very high rpms and by the time I'm shifting gears at 10,000 rpms or even more, I"m going to be a dead man in a hurry.

The driving conditions here are vastly different than they are in the U.S. But when I took a look at that 650 Yamaha V-star on Yamaha's web site last night, I thought..."now that bike would be a pretty good bike for U.S. highways. Shaft drive, enough horsepower to get the job done, good looks, relatively low fuel consumption. Who needs 1000 plus cc's? But if I was reading correctly for a 650 that Yamaha sure seemed slow from the figures I saw. 83 miles an hour in a quarter of a mile? Sounds pretty Chinese E to me. Well, I don't know where they got such low numbers as my BMW 650 would do about 90 in a quarter of a mile to the 88 miles an hour for the HOnda 450. But I'll bet it sure drives well.

The Lifan in the U.S. and Great Britain (250b) has a listed "cruise speed" of 75mph. Not a lot more, but it is shown in GB that the bike offers only 16 bhp??

Horsepower is a tricky thing, anyway the Lifan LF250 has about 21 horsepower at the crank and 17 in the rear wheel. This is similar to what a Yamaha V-Star 250 has available.

The thing with a cruiser is not that you need a lot of horsepower to have good machine, it's surely not a race bike. But for cruisers a good amount of torque is always welcome, and on the torque part the Lifan has a good amount if you compare it to other cruisers.

Of course you can always experiment with changing the sprockets to loose some torque to gain some horsepower...

I was a little mystified by some of the horsepower figures I've seen for this bike as well. I've seen from such places as Bikez the Lifan 250-B has around 18.5 which puts it in the same class as the Tiger 250 which although it develops a lot less horsepower than a Ninja 250 (which can possibly do as much as 100 mph top end) gets its power on the low to mid range which makes the bikes much more enjoyable say in city driving. Then I read that the Yamaha V-star gets about 21 horsepower. I wondered where the difference between 18.5 and 21 went. Certainly the only place I'd read that the Lifan 250-B only develops 16 horsepower or even less is here on this board. But last night I finally found more data on such larger Yamaha models as the Yamaha V-star 650, and I was amazed at the low power figures for this bike. Reminded me of the BMW R-65 I once owned which had just 50 horsepower, which was just five more than the Honda CB-450 i owned a few years previously. Well, it might have had just 50 horsepower but that BMW 650 sure drove good in all conditions except for racing or going around corners fast. comparing inline 250, 4 valve, injection, liquidcooled in a sports machine, with v-twin carbed 2 valve aircooled, hp usually doubles.

yammy 650 cruiser is also a 2 valve carbed aircooled v-twin. their 1100 carbed 2 valve v-twin has 65hp as I recall, less than half of R1000 inline 4.

That web site doesn't quite get it for me, but this one does Lifan web site for model LF 250-B First thing that grabbed me is the posted top speed of only 100 km/hr. However, remembering what was said earlier here, the Chinese post this as it's the legal limit so it is a meaningless number. The next number is horsepower. It would appear to be a measly 13 horsepower. However, I know my Nouvo Elegance 135 produces 11.2 horsepower of one color or another. So I went to Wikipedia. My Elegance produces just 8.4 kw according to Wikipedia. So if we take 13 and subtract 8.4 from this and divide by 8.4 we come up with a 55 % increase. Multiply 11.2 by 1.55 gives us 17.36 horsepower which is about what the CBR 150 produces and the Tiger 250 offers. However, torque for the Nouvo Elegance is 10.6 to Wikipedia's torque figure of 19. This means the Lifan 250 produces roughly 80 percent more torque than the Nouvo Elegance. Contrast this torque figure at 6000 rpms to the 150 CBR's 13.5 at 8500 rpms.

Back to top speeds. Bikez has the CBR 150 managing 99.4 miles an hour. That's funny because my Honda CB 350 at double the displacement was basically a 90 mile per hour bike. My Honda CB 450 was only good for 100 miles an hour. But Bikez has the 350 Honda CB doing something like 103 miles an hour. Anyway there's a lot of numbers being churned out. I had tractors that had only about 90 horsepower but they could do an awful lot of work such as pulling buildings down, producing a nice seedbed to plant in with an 18 foot field cultivator. I'm wondering how a 160 horsepower Yamaha street bike engine would fare against one of those.
