we are in isaan now and i want to take wife and kid on a break, ive never been to samui, i hear its expensive, we want nice beaches and a a decent beach bungalow at no more then 1000 baht per nite, we usually go to koh chang and we stay near backpackers bungalows with air con etc for 600 thb per nite which we think is a good price especially near beach front. i like a drink and some night life too so where is best to go samui - chewang ? lamai ? koh pang nang ? ive never seen full moon party so when is next one on the island ? im also wondering if i can fly from udon to samui ? too many questions i know but would appreciate some good sound advice. if samui is too expensive we will go stay in pang nang if its not so pricey.

thanks, dmax

Next Full Moon Party is 26 June. If you want loud music all night, lots of young people, many drunk and some drugged, then it is the place for you. But not with a baby I would say!

Yes we are quiet, low season and low tourism generally. Samui and KPP are similarly priced, and are relatively expensive, but you should get somewhere for your budget. Personally would suggest Maenam, Bophut or Bangrak. Chaweng can be loud and busy. Try someone like Agoda to get a feel for prices. Beaches are great, but we have low tides right now, so can be a bit rocky.

Flights into Samui are from Bangkok, not from Udon and are expensive, but you could get here by flying with say Air Asia to Bangkok and on to Surat, then ferry, a lot cheaper probably.

Would I recommend you come here? Of course I would!!! :)

Koh Phangan is most likely quieter than Samui. If you would like night life and cheap bungalow, you can get a really nice room with a/c for 1.200,-THB per night at Lucky Mama in Chaweng, it's a room at the back of the resort not a bungalow on the beach. Good value though. There are other cheap options out there. The closer to the beach the more expensive it usually gets.

South Lamai > wonderful beach, deep water, everywhere cheaper Bungalow Resorts, not far away from a center with bars and restaurants and shops.

You can get to the full moon party from everywhere picked up from your place by buying a combi ticket transfers & boat at many tour agencies.

Classic comment from somebody never been in Koh Phangan. :)

The day of Full Moon (the night) will be noisy on the Haad Rin East beach mad around Baan Sabai (bantai beach) the day after. The rest of the island (99%) is quiet and shanti like every other day.

Being low season now will be easy to find nice and cheap accomodation everywhere.

If you like swim I suggest places in the East coast like Haad Yuan, Haad Tien, Than Sadet, Bottle Beach, Tong Nai Pan (also Haad Rin East outside full moon days), because now low tide is almost always during day hours make swimming impossible in beautiful places like Srithanu, Chaloklum, Haad Yao, Had Salad (mostly on the West Side) because of the exposed reef and too shallow water.

Aside the weather not so favourable, in this season KPG is lovely, not crowded, green, no more so hot.

Agree entirely with your comments about the other 99% of the island. The OP implied he wanted to visit the other 1% on that one night.

It is not to everyones liking. I know. I have been there. :D

Come to Koh Phangan, it's nice and easy here, lowsaison, cheap prices now, nightlife at haad rin on full moon and the rest is quiet. Samui is just a scam.

Koh Phangyan has learnt from samui's mistakes. Samui built up slowly and was not ready for the mass influx of business which basically has left the place in a never ending mess..

where as Koh Phangyan's island was much under developed while the boom was going on. now the Other side of the Island like haad yao and Haad salad are amazing. un spoilt quiet and even not over fished. perfect place to get away from the stress of topical paraadise :)

:DOh I thought they meant the prison in Bangkok. Not the island between Koh Samai and Koh Toa. Not a bad attempt though by BigC standards.

Actually there are two Haad Yaos on Koh Phangan and while I haven't been to Haad Yao East in a about a year or so, it was not built up when I was there. Haad Salad, however, is quite built up but nothing compared to Haadrin or Haad Yao West.
