How To Select Browser When Clicking On A Link?

Recommended Posts

I have one browser (IE) set as default, so naturally when I click on a link in an e-mail or on the web it opens in IE.

Of some links I know they would work better if I open them in Chrome (my secondary browser).

How can I select which browser to open the link with?

Right click does not provide any options, is there a keyboard shortcut + click to get a selection of browsers?

For now I have to copy the link, open the browser I want and paste it there.

I do not know how to do what you ask, however my approach is slightly different but maybe a version of it could work for you

My default browser is Firefox and all links open in that.

I have the 'IE Tab Plus' extension installed which lets me open sites that do not display properly in Firefox as an IE tab within the Firefox window by just clicking the "switch rendering icon" in the status bar.

In addition the IE Tab Plus extension lets me define sites (such as the nation) which do not operate correctly in Firefox to open by default in an IE tab.

Hope this helps

Right, this is where Firefox shines!

I personally don't use IE but a Google search brought up this link

http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/ie-extension-open-web-page-different-browser/

There is a minor security risk to run this because the reg file contains binary code that I could not verify.

I personally doubt that it is harmful, but use at your own risk.

Thanks for all your replies.

I'm aware that there are plug-ins for some browsers awailable to do what I want.

However this requires that the browser is open in the first place.

If for example I get an e-mail (I use OE6, so not web-based) with a link and I would like to open the link in a browser other than my default one without having to go through the default browser first.

Is there any way to achieve this?

Interesting idea!

Took me some time to come up with a suitable google search term ;) but this is what I found

http://browserchooser.codeplex.com/

http://www.freewaregenius.com/2009/11/04/browsermaster-choose-your-browser-on-the-fly-whenever-you-click-on-a-link/

However, I didn't install/try any of this myself.

If it doesn't work in a certain app than probably because this program calls the browser executable directly and does not respect the system browser default setting. You will have to configure that specific program to use the browserchooser/-master executable as browser I guess.

Thanks Welo. :wai:

I have been googleing for 2 days and coud not find anything. How did you do this?

The first link you listed is not working but the second one looks very promising. Will start working on it tomorrow and see if it suits my needs.

;)

Google 'choose which browser to open link', 2nd result = first find, then in the comments section somebody mentions the second find.

Browser Chooser (the first link) seems to be the more popular of the two, not sure why it doesn't work for you.

browserchooser[dot]codeplex[dot]com

works for me on TOT/GoogleDNS

I'm sure there are other solutions out there, but somebody has to find them first ;)

Btw you could also just use drag'n'drop.
