webfact
Deputy PM Plays Down Emergency Law Dissent The deputy prime minister insists he is not embarrassed by the Cabinet's rejection of his proposed extension of the emergency decree enforcement in all 24 provinces but says he is still unsure about security in several provinces. Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security Suthep Thaugsuban, also director of the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation, said he is sill not confident that the violence situation has completely ended, as there is still movement underground. Suthep stated there were differing viewpoints among the ministers over appropriate duration of the emergency law in five provinces where its imposition was lifted under a Cabinet resolution yesterday, but insisted he is content to comply with the decision. Suthep said the prime minister's opposition to his suggested extension of the emergency rule in all 24 provinces was not intended to embarrass him, but his disapproval was based on his own perspective. The deputy prime minister also denied Pheu Thai Party's allegation that some red-shirt elements have been held in military camps in Kanchanaburi and Saraburi. Suthep stated that the detention of suspects in the red-shirt protest cases is in compliance with the law and stated that Pheu Thai spokesperson Prompong Nopparit and red-shirt core leader Chatuporn Prompan could face legal action for falsely accusing army personnel of abusing the people. He then advised the National Human Rights Commission to examine the facts thoroughly before criticizing the detention of the red-shirt riot suspects, as its statement could bring about misunderstanding and more problems. Suthep also said the new red-shirt TV channel, Asia Update, will be kept under a close watch to see whether or not its content is aimed at inciting a new round of social conflicts. The deputy prime minister also marked his 61 birthday today by calling for cooperation from all parties to rebuild national peace and promote people's happiness. -- Tan Network 2010-07-
