Taxi Drivers Saves Abandoned Baby Girl

Quick action by taxi drivers saves abandoned baby girl

BANGKOK: -- Two motorcycle taxi drivers yesterday saved the life of a newborn baby they found abandoned at a shopping mall in Bang Kapi.

Pichit Duangpakdi, 30, and Thawin Lao-ard, 34, told police that they heard a baby crying under an exit ramp at the Tesco-Lotus store.

On searching for the source of the crying, they found a plastic shopping bag tightly knotted. They opened it and found a baby girl inside, with the umbilical cord still attached and mosquito bites covering her face and body.

When they saw that the infant was still alive, the men rushed her to the nearby Vejthani Hospital.

Prof Doctor Amara Panit, deputy director of the hospital, said the baby weighed just 1.94 kilos, compared to the average of 2.50 kg for a newborn. She added that it was unlikely she was born prematurely.

The doctor said the baby’s umbilical cord had been removed and would be handed over to social workers after fully recovering.

Police said they had launched an investigation to determine who had abandoned the baby, adding that the culprit would be charged with attempted murder as the bag was tightly closed.

In an unrelated case, a four-month-old girl died yesterday, probably from suffocation, her mother said. She said the infant had been lying face down in bed and a blanket may have obstructed her breathing.

The mother, Supranee Tangkhananuwat, 34, said she found her daughter, Supakhanang, unconscious around noon after she had left the baby sleeping while she went downstairs.

As Supranee drove the infant to hospital, Supakhanang began bleeding from her nose and mouth. Supranee decided to go to the nearest health centre.

A health worker there tried to stimulate the girl’s heart but her efforts were fruitless.

The health worker said the girl had been dead for more than 10 minutes.

The baby’s body was transferred to Siriraj Hospital for an autopsy, but doctors have yet to establish the cause of death.

Definately a murder if not for the quick action of the m/t drivers.

hope the police catch the culprit.

Good news and bad, bittersweet.

Always hate it when bad things happen to the defenceless. Most of all children.

May whatever is in charge protect them both.

The umbilical cord will be handed over to social workers after recovering? I have never heard of an umbilical cord recovering after being cut...
