Landslide closes road to Myanmar border

MAE HONG SON: -- A landslide has blocked the road to the Myanmar border making it impossible for buses and heavy trucks to travel along it.

The road between Mae Hong Son and Baan Rong Haeng, some four kilometres from the border, is now blocked by earth and rocks following the landslide caused by the heavy rain over the past few days.

Pick-up cars can pass but drivers need to be very cautious while driving along the road.

Local officials have not cleared the earth and rocks from the road.

A bus operator in the area told TNA that the road was closed two days ago but so far no provincial highway officials have tried to deal with the problem.

As a result trucks carrying cargo for Myanmar have been unable to cross the border.

Heavy humidity around the mountains near the border has caused continuous heavy rain, the Mae Hong Song weather station chief, Pisit Puangsuwan told TNA.

He urged people living near the mountains to be aware of possible flash floods because of the rainy season.
