Since the whole economic crisis started in 2007/2008 how have the numbers of foreigners moving to Thailand been impacted? Have the numbers gone up dramatically or have they declined?

It's not simply the drop in arrivals.

There's been a marked increase here on TV in the number of people announcing their departure.

Given that we might expect TV membership to be representative of expats in Thailand, but by no means the full count of expats in Thailand (likely a small fraction) then the numbers of people announcing they are leaving here on TV can be understood as the tip of the iceberg.

And that doesn't take into account the numbers of people sneaking off home without saying goodbye.

I amnot knowledgeable about new numbers . But since they put paved roads up where I live the number of foreigners coming up to the area I live has increased. Many from Phuket and Pattaya now with the economic crises going on cannot afford those areas any more. Never seen these guys around till it got easier to get here. Progress does have its price.

There may be a few more announcements than usual. However, as usual, they never seem to actually leave. :D

I'm hearing, and know of a number of people that are leaving Samui. But they're not leaving Thailand. They are happy to remain living here. It's because they find Samui so expensive, which in fairness it is compared with other places here.

For each one that leaves there will be plenty more waiting to take their place, and despite the wealth of information available here,

the latest arrivals will convince themselves that, their girl is different, or the previous bar owner didnt have a clue and they will now make this bar work afterall how can they lose they paid a pittance for it, what a bargain, and so the cycle continues.

I have heard it all over the years, a particular favourite was the guy who bought 4 brand new cars for cash (not in his name of course, because farang can not own car) so that his girlfriends father and brothers could operate as taxi drivers. Seemed so easy all he had to do was sit at home, drink beer and wait for the money to roll in each day.

Orchards in Chanthaburi, gyms in Samui, hairdresser shops in Pattaya are just a few more off the top of my head.

Farang can own a car. I do. With registration book in my name. Why such silly misinformation on this forum? <deleted>

Should have said I early-retired here, rather than left, since the powers-that-be have removed the "from" field.

I believe, outside of the expected Farang markets of Bangkok metro, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Samui, etc., the hinterlands and other areas are experiencing a drop in Farang residents. Those that are leaving or those whom have declined to find these upcountry locales undesirable. I personally think that numbers of resident-types has fallen dramatically - for whatever reason.

Clearly the guy doesnt have a work permit, I know that is one requirement to own a car, can you own one on a retirement visa? So depending on what type of visa he has (this particular) falang probably can not own a car. Oh well, a fool and his money are soon parted, as they say.

Yes you can of course.

I have owned 2 vehicles, green books etc, re-registered the 2nd one recently.

Never had a work permit. Not old enough to be retired.

I REALLY hope you're right.

Most of the departees seemed to be bitter Englishmen whining mostly about their own currency. Hope the door didn't hit them on the way out. :P

Sorry, but what does that mean? If, for instance, you're in an 'upcountry locale' and you find it undesirable, then that would be a reason to leave. I don't understand how you could decline to find it undesirable. That would imply that you had been given a choice (which you declined) and to find things desirable or otherwise, isn't usually a matter of choice. You either like it or you don't,

And doesn't 'declined to find it undesirable' actually mean they chose to like it? (double negative)

Do you mean 'those who find these upcountry locales undesirable'?

ie. they don't like it, which is why they're leaving?
