What Is The Preferred Method To Safeguard Ones Personal Documents While Here In Los?

I am wondering how everyone safeguards their personal records, especially family birth and marriage records, house and vehicle titles / registration books, immigration records, receipts, etc., etc. Those documents you don't carry on your person 24/7 yet could ill afford to 'lose'? Would there be a different document storing method for a condo dweller versus a house dweller in the city or in a small village?

These documents are more likely to be stolen directly from the source. Hide them as well as you can, but you can still easily be the victim of identity theft.

Be careful when shopping. I bought a fireproof safe but was told it was not safe to drill through it to bolt it down (asbestos I suppose) and there is no way to bolt it down except to encase in cement (which is a bit extreme). The result, I am probably going to look for a new safe that I can bolt down somewhere.

I looked around and bought one with the holes already in it. :)

You made the better choice!

You could take it along to any of the fabrication shops along Sukhumvit or Theppasit (probably elsewhere as well) and get them to drill the holes.

If you tell them about the asbestos they will wear a mask (possibly).

I know where we are but isn't asbestos illegal now, and a form of fibre glass is used as a substitute. :) .

I was told clearly by the salesperson that it was dangerous to ever drill holes in the safe I bought. I don't want to risk it.

I also took a photo of all important documents and put them online. Useful to keep a copy online and easy to print when you need copies.

Obviously scan everything and have it online in multiple places. As for originals, copies in at least one place other than the original. As for safes, if you are building a house, have a waterproofed and concrete encased hole put in the ground which has a safe put in it (not these flimsy things) and whose door opens upwards. Can be covered with flooring albeit with some access. Also perhaps have a dummy, easy to remove flimsy safe which they will find first and steal, which has some crap in it and a little money etc.

Buy a safe and Rawl bolt it to the concrete floor out of sight. :) If the floor is thin, open it up and fill with at least 6 inches of concrete. If condo bolt it to the wall at floor level.

Same, same.

That`s what I done. I bought a small safe at Big C, just large enough to hold documents and any cash we have about the house. 945 baht.

There are 2 types, lock with keys or combination lock.

OP. Use at least 8 or 10 mm bolts if possible.

We have a safe, bolted down as suggested and we also have a Safety Deposit box at the bank.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will try to use all three methods!
