"Fresh Vegetable Detective" project launched

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Consumer Protection Police Division have jointly launched the “Fresh Vegetable Detective”, allowing people to notify the authorities of any shop selling poor quality fresh vegetables.

The project was launched on Sunday at the Marketing Organization for Farmers, also known as Or Tor Kor, to encourage vegetable shops to sell quality and clean fresh vegetables to consumers. Demonstrations on how to buy and clean vegetables were held, with participation of vendors, consumers, and celebrities.

The “Fresh Vegetable Detective” project aims to notify authorities of shops in the markets which sell sub-standard green to consumers. People who come across such shops can call authorities at 1556, the FDA hotline.

According to a random fresh vegetable quality survey conducted at the Marketing Organization for Farmers on 6 August 2010, no pesticide residue was found in 36 samples of vegetables taken from eight shops in the market.

Vendors selling poor quality fresh vegetables will be warned for the time being. Legal action will be taken from 1 January 2011 onwards. Sellers of poor quality fresh vegetables could face a fine of up to 50,000 THB.

PREAH VIHEAR DISPUTE

Thailand will adhere to laws and peaceful means : PM

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday reiterated Thailand has adhered to peaceful means and would settle the dispute with Cambodia over Preah Vihear controversy according to the laws and agreements in place.

Abhisit said his government is sending a letter to the United Nations to clarify its position regarding its border dispute after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen told the world body Thailand is threatening to use force to settle the wrangle.

The premier said the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is not yet settled and Thailand is exploring existing and possible measures to find the best solution for both sides to stay together peacefully.

Thailand will inform the UN how Cambodia encroached upon Thai territory, he said, adding Thailand had to protect its national interests.

The Thai premier made the comment after Hun Sen sent a letter to the UN in which he accused Thailand of threatening to use its forces to settle the dispute.

Hun Sen's letter, which was also sent to the media, said statements by Abhisit when he addressed the civil society groups on Saturday represented "a clear threat to use military force" to settle the border problem and therefore in violation of UN rules.

The Cambodian premier reaffirmed his country's policy not to use military means to settle disputes with its neighbours but that it reserved its legitimate right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in case of deliberate acts of aggression.

BORDER TENSION

Troopers will no way intrude into Cambodia : Suthep

By The Nation

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban reaffirmed on Monday that Thai troops are on alert along the Thai-Cambodian border, but they will not intrude into Cambodian territory.

Suthep also reiterated that Thailand upholds to live with its neighbour peacefully.

The Thai deputy premier said that the neighbouring country has its right to prepare its armed forces as long as they do not invade Thai soil.

He also gave assurances that the ongoing tension will not lead to the closure of the Thai-Cambodian border.

In his letter to the United Nations, Hun Sen reiterated the border dispute had been ruled on in Cambodia's favour by the world court in 1962 and by other bodies on occasions since 1904.

"In violating the judgment of the International Court of Justice, Thailand currently maintains its soldiers in the Keo Sikkhakiri Svara pagoda of Cambodia, situated only about 300 metres from the Temple of Preah Vihear, well inside Cambodian territory," Hun Sen wrote.

By threatening to use military force, Thailand "flagrantly violates" the UN Charter, he added.

Teens told to wear proper outfits to prevent mosquito bites

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Public Health Ministry cautions teenagers to resort to clothing that can help prevent mosquito bites after the number of dengue fever patients rocketed to more than 40,000 in the past seven months.

According to Deputy Public Health Minister, Dr Phansiri Kullanartsiri, the accumulated number of dengue fever patients from January to July 2010 stood at 45,379 people with 43 confirmed fatalities. The figure was 40% higher than that of the same period last year.

Children and teenagers, aged 10 to 24, accounted for 52% of the total patients. The statistics was different from three to four years ago when dengue fever was mostly found in children younger than nine years old.

Dr Phansiri stressed that people and teenagers should avoid wearing leggings due to their thinness and inability to prevent mosquito bites. The Minister also warned against dressing in dark colors, which attracted the insect. Instead, she recommended lighter-colored apparel and thick trousers, such as jeans, in order to effectively stave off mosquito bites amidst the prevalence of dengue fever from June to September.
