Passport Book Number For U.S. Visa?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I hope someone might be able to help me out with a question that I can't for the life of me seem to find an answer to. I am helping my Thai wife apply for a tourist visa to go to the United States. On the application form it asks for her passport number and the "passport book number" (if applicable). Does anyone know if Thai passports have a "passport book number" and, if so, where it is? The only number I see on the book is below a bar code on the back cover. I don't know if that is it or not.

Thanks....D

Open the passport to the photo information page (Page 2). In the top right corner is the passport number.

Thanks. It is my understanding though that that it is the passport number (that is what it is labeled as) and not the "passport book number". If what you say is true then that would mean that the "personal no." (which is the same as the Thai national ID number) on page 2 is the actual passport number, and that would seem to be incorrect. Your take on that?

The personal number is just that: the Thai national ID number.

That number in the top right corner (Passport No.) IS the number that is entered onto the successful entry visa to the USA, I am looking at 7 of her visas that have that number on the US visas.

Okay, so then I was right. That number in the right hand corner is the passport number--and that would be what you are seeing on her Visa. But this is the situation. When you fill out the application it asks for two numbers: 1) The Passport Number and 2) The Passport Book Number (also known as a passport inventory number). Not all passports have this number. And what I need to know is if Thai passports do and, if so, where it is located.

Thanks....D

I don't recall ever dealing with a "2) The Passport Book Number (also known as a passport inventory number)". I am looking 3 of her passports (2 of which are expired). Leave that blank and ask at the embassy when you go with her to apply.

I guess I could do that. I was just a little concerned because the application must be filed electronically beforehand and nothing can be left blank. I would have to click "not applicable" which may or may not be true.

Ok, that's new to me then, last time I got her a visa (valid for 10 years) was in 2004 and then it was done in person.

Good luck then.

Edited to add: Personally, I would click "not applicable" as I cannot find that number you are looking for either.

Okay, if you are arriving here wondering about the book number/inventory control number, the thing to do is just click "not applicable". I just heard from the Visas Unit, which said if you cannot seem to locate the passport book number that you should "assume" that it is not applicable. Of course, one should never "assume" anything when filling out official documents but since the Visa Unit themselves don't seem to know one way or another of the book number exists, then clicking not applicable is the way to go. That is undoubtedly what all applicants are doing.
