Want to spend a week in Vietnam in August. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap flight there. Also I'm undecided as to where I will go in Vietnam. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to spend a week. I have to do some visa stuff, but that should only take a couple of days.

If you will be in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City (as it is now called) I reccomend you make a trip south to Vung Tau or Cap St Jacques (sp?) the old French beach resort area just south (90 to 100 miles if memory serves me right) of Ho Chi Minh city. Won't be like Pattaya, but had a good beach (Front beach) and good restaurants from the French time. Haven't been there since 1970, but was a nice quiet beach area. Expect the "bar/girls" street disapeared once all the American soldiers left. Might be some remnents of "night life" left. Can't say what it is like now, but should be still a nice beach area. In 1970, you could get good cheap Fish meals in restaurants.

Hope it hasn't been ruined by the "Tourists".

P.S. Try the Vietnamese fish sauce "Nuoc Mam (sp?) on your rice at least once while you are there. Smelly, but salty & oily taste that adds taste to rice.

You could try Hanoi. It's smaller and more laid-back than Saigon. There's a lovely old French quarter, lots of nice bars (all of which seem to have good-quality pool tables), cafes, museums, a lake, reasonably-priced hotels.

If that gets a bit dull for you, you can nip up to Halong Bay for a day or two and chill out.

If you are in Hanoi, I would hit Halong Bay and visit several of the islands. If you are in HCMC, I would either go to DaLat to get out of the heat or hit Vung Tao or Mui Ne. Mui Ne is less busy than Vung Tao, great if you just want to relax.

August could be rather hot, so if you are in the south, check out Dalat, a nice hill side resort a few hours drive from saigon. Nice scenery, not much to see & do, but a nice laidback atmosphere. The old hotel (Sofitel?) in worth a visit.

Nha Trang has some nice beaches, rent a motorbike and explore the countryside. Hoi An is also worth a visit.

I and my wife are also booked for a short trip (3 nights 4 days) to Vietnam in the end of August. Air France started Bangkok - HoChiMinh City and Bangkok - Hanoi service a while ago and they have launched a promotion targeted at Thailand residents only and we are taking advantage of that (but with the condition you have to be their frequent flyer program member). Just called the Air France and booked the flight for 25th. We wanted to fly sooner but was told return flights in August is all booked up till August 20th. The package price we're paying is B9,400 per pax which includes 2 nights stay at Sofitel Plaza Saigon (4 stars, includes breakfast but excludes airport tax and insurance surcharge). Novotel is even cheaper at B8,800 but was told by the Air France Novotel is not in the city center and not so convenient to get around so chose the Sofitel. If for Novotel, you can stay for as little as B8,800 (twin sharing) or B11,600 if you're travelling alone (includes round trip air fare). We will be staying for 3 nights so that is another B3,400+ for extra night at the Sofitel Saigon for two of us. The promotion is called "Summber Combo Package" (destination Hanoi or HoChiMinh) and will last till the end of October.
