How do you find out about good restaurants, businesses and etc that are on the north part of the island? surin included? Driving there aimlessly sounds kind of dumb.. there's no restaurants from there listed in the 'Favorite restaurant thread' and obviously google never brings anything but scams and publicity for crap tours when you search about anything from thailand

Info on the area much of it taken from the recommended restaurants section:

MAI KHAO

Many premium resorts with good restaurants. Marriot currently offering 2 for 1 with AMEX

NAI YANG

INDIGO PEARL - Probably the best sunday brunch on the island

NAI HARN (not sure if this is still up to date)

Nok Yoong (somewhere in the bendy Nai Harn Road)

Oasis BBQ chicken (before Soi Cokmakham)

Lorenzo's in Nai Harn (At the main entrance to the Royal Meridian Yatch Club) Great pizza, great other items too, also great music, although a touch expensive compared to maggies, worth it for the location.

The best Pizza in Thailand is to be had on NaiHarn beach. Owned and operated by an expat Italian guy who learnt from a master Pizza maker in Italy before he moved to Thailand to be with his Thai wife. Called Lorenzo's - looks very downmarket shack in amongst the other restaurants / shops but it really is the bet Pizza. Cooked in authentic stone oven (built himself). Has a tree in the middle going through the roof. Open everday / evening during the season. A bit hit and mis off season

SURIN BEACH/LAGUNA

TWIN BROTHERS restaurant right on Surin Beach. Run by a great guy named Bow as in Ow!

PEPPERS - on the road leading to Laguna. Offers decent western food on with good beer selection and pool tables

OPUS ONE - in Surin Plaza- expensive, but absolutely magic place to be.

BLACK CAT - Good Restaurant in ChernTalay with a large selection of quality thai and western food with a french touch. (also a good cheap thai restaurant next door)

MCDONALDS and PIZZA COMPANY - Bangtao Tesco Lotus Complex

TWIN PALMS - Another amazing sunday brunch, Indigo pearl has all you can drink wine though.

Markets all serving good food, fresh produce and some clothes :

ChernTalay Market oposite police station every Sunday and Wednesday

BangTao Market near Tesco Lotus every Monday and Thursday

Bangtao Market near Mosque every Tuesday and Friday

Outside Mosque in BangTao during Ramadan in the evening many food vendors

near the black cat, there is a tiny little thai restaurant...i think it's called "sunset restaurant". the chef used to be employed within laguna phuket. the food is fabulous thai food at extremely cheap prices with big portions. there's also a new restaurant at the entrance of laguna called "the spoon", but haven't eaten there yet...the ambience looks nice, though!

Appologies I didnt mean to post Nai Harn in the listing.

From previous postings on here many people in Phuket like McDonalds and Pizza Company. Personaly I hate them. Everyday I drive past it is full of Falang so I was attempting to be helpful.

You mention Surin which is not really in the north of the island, so you may be interested in this restaurant which is more or less as far north as Surin is.

On your way to the airport from Phuket Town, turn right at Heroines' Monument. Drive for one or two kilometres and, on the right, you'll see a brightly coloured sign for GITANO. (It's the last of a bunch of new, mostly unoccupied, shop-houses.)

Fantastic place. Clean, very different, Thai and Mexican food (haven't tried the Mexican because the Thai's so good!), air conditioned, kids' playroom, interesting collection of books to browse. Not expensive.(Green curry 90 Baht.) They are closed on Wednesdays.

The location is such that you'd expect this restaurant to fail, but, because the food is so good, they are doing well.

No, I don't know anywhere else that caters for kids like Gitano does. But then I wouldn't know, 'cause I don't have children.

It's interesting that you call it a "family restaurant". I've never thought of it as such, but I suppose it is. For sure, the books certainly aren't what you'd expect to find in a family restaurant!

Anyway, I'm glad you liked the place.
