Growing Concerns About Bird Flu In Ne

Featured Replies

Contacts in public health circles are telling me of growing concerns about a possible outbreak of the H5N1 virus in central Isaan. It is said that there is one confirmed case in Kalasin keet 14, with other cases awaiting test results. The story is that the MoPH is not keen to publicise this. It is too early to panic but members may wish to keep a special eye out for mystery illnesses, especially in children, and seek testing at an early stage. Early symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and conjunctivitis.

H5N1 or HA1 as the Thais call it is in Bangkok already. Three of my Thai family are recovering from it.

My friend also in Bangkok has three of his Thai family that have H5N1.

It is flu season in Thailand due to seasonal change.

The generic Tamiflu works.

Pleased to hear your family members are recovering. The less virulent H1N1 virus is said to be near-endemic in Thailand and expected to return every year, but my understanding is that H5N1 is less common and more serious. However, you are correct to say that the latter is also known here as HA1. In any event there is a bit of a flap on locally about the possible outbreak.

I know that at least one died in SiSaKet from H1N1.
