Travelling To Thailand Next April On Honeymoon...

Featured Replies

Hi.

Me and the wife-to-be will be traveling to Thailand next April for our honeymoon, and I just have a couple of questions...

We're looking to stay on one of the many remote islands/beaches (dont worry I dont need advice on which!), I'm just curious as to what the safety/crime is like on the more remote islands? And also, what the warning systems for emergencies such as tsunamis (yes, I am aware they are very rare) are on remote islands? I wouldn't usually ever worry about that, but being quite far from shore in some cases, it would be nice for some reassurances, and also would the west coast be more vulnerable than east?

Obviously we are aware common sense always prevails when thinking about crime, and I've read that most people feel more safe in Thailand than they do in their home towns!

Thanks for any help and advice!

Lit.

Well the west coast is more vulnerable to tsunami because of its proximity to the fault lines. However allowing that to come into your thinking is like deciding your route to work based upon airline flight paths and the possibility of an aircraft descending upon you. I think also what you are thinking of as "remote" islands are not what some of us would term remote. What is remote are the chances of you being affected by crime and/or a tsunami. If I were you I would concentrate more on other aspects of your trip.

It will be hot.

If you are coming over the Songkran period, enjoy the more rural aspects of it.

It will be hot.

There is only a remote chance of a Tsunami anywhere in Thailand. To avoid any Tsunami - Gulf of Thailand (East of the mainland).

Get on the west side of an island for good sunsets in April.

Safety etc - it's one of the safest places in the world (in spite of all that you read on TV)

Be sensible. Keep the diamond rings at home, along with the gold rolex's and the wallets full of 1,000 baht notes. Why tempt people who earn 150 baht a day (if they are lucky). Yes there will be rip-offs, but with a smile - not a gun.

Rural Thailand is great, but not for a honeymoon. (Second honeymoon, yes) You will want English speaking, decent romantic restaurants, resorts etc. Beaches on a honeymoon seem to go down well.

Have fun. (We are even after 10 years of living here.)

Edited because - yes, it will be very hot.

Hi!

Thanks for the replies. I know how rare these events are, and we'd never think twice about going just because of that, merely a question of safety!

We've been warned about the heat, but to be honest I could put up with the heat for the spectacular views, amazing people, and amazing culture. If it get's too unbearable I'll just spend my day in the ocean, not a bad thing in my eyes. But yeah, we'd considered it maybe being almost TOO hot for us, but we have really fallen in love with the place since researching.

We're looking at staying on Koh Ngai, or maybe Koh Tao. But Koh Ngai seems to be our favourite at the moment although we would miss out on sunsets. We can't wait to get out there, wish we were going tomorrow.!

Only go to Koh Tao if you want to dive a lot.

Over-priced, no real Thai food or Thai culture there. (Most workers I met were Burmese).

In-land is a bit of a rubbish tip and not easy to get around.

Only good for diving - then it is very good.

But this is just my opinion (oh, and also of my friends, neighbours and wife!)
