Afternoon Drinking

I have seen a number of comments on here stating the inability to buy drinks in restaurants between 2 and 5pm.

I have never had a problem anywhere getting a drink at this time. I am fully aware that shops and supermarkets are not supposed to sell alcohol during these hours (unless you buy 10 litres or more) but restaurants? Bars?

Is there just an element of confusion in certain establishments or ar there hard and fast but also ridiculous rules?

The not so hard and not so very fast rule seems to be that if you are a big, well-known retailer or an expat owned bar, you can't sell alcohol between 2 and 5. Everyone else can sell any time they want. If you are selling alcohol spiked fruit juice and soda to school children then you are encouraged to sell between 2 and 5 because that's when the kids are out of school and not yet under the supervision (?!?) of their parents.
