Job Hunting Bkk

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a ticket to BKK leaving the 4th. of November.

Plan is to drop the return flight, find a job and stay there.

I'm checking employment sites now and apparently Thai focus a lot on degrees.

I don't have one (but lots of training on the job so I'm competent).

I heard that no degree means no work permit unless an employer states that he'll hire you.

What's the best way to find a legal job in BKK in my situation ? ( recruitment offices, focussing on int'l companies, ...? )

Thanks for your advise!

If I was you I would make sure the return portion of your ticket does not expire.

Apart from teaching or taking a Thai language course then other decent paying jobs for expats are as rare a rocking horse sh-t. :D

My return ticket is 28 days later. I hope I'll find a job before I leave and if not then within these 28 days.

I realize that it won't be easy at all...

They also ask quite weird things on these job sites like:

my height, my weight, the name, age and occupation of my parents :-/

And except for the many thai-only jobs (which I perfectly understand) there's also discrimination (at least, that's what it's called in Belgium,

and therefore forbidden) regarding gender and age.

As if they do their very best to make it as difficult as possible :-D

Thanks!

I suppose you're then talking about a ticket which I can modify?

I'll see what I can do. I bought it because it was a cheap ticket but this way it won't stay cheap

The ajarn.com jobsboard.

Look at the positions paying 30k p/m. They mightn't care that you've no degree or qualifications. Wear trousers 4 inches above your ankles. You'll fit right in.

I am registered on ajarn (among others).

Meaning?

Just try to visit some schools in BKK.

If you really think you can teach English Im sure you will find a job even without a degree or workpermit....

I know balo ;)

I prefer a legal job to avoid frequent visa runs but teaching without degree might be a start.

Maybe i shouldn't focus too hard on the legal part for now :)

discrimination and outright racism is perfectly accepted in the whole of Asia.

without a degree and any knowledge of the thai language or culture i think

there's no way you can get a job in BKK but this is even more true in other

places in Asia like Japan or Korea.

no idea why Thai put such enphasys on degrees as many of their universities

are a joke and the average Thai is semi-analphabet.

as a last chance you could try volunteering or join a buddhist temple...

I heard fom different people that teaching without a degree is possible.

Unfortunately visa runs will become expensive :ermm:

I must say that I was quite surprised to notice the discrimination...

I really wasn't aware of the fact that it would be so bad...

Here in Belgium HR departments started to look at competences only 2/3 years ago.

That evolution came together with a changing opinion about job-hopping.

Before you needed to have a degree as well.

Not that I want to compare the situation in Belgium to the one in Thailand (otherwise I could just as well stay here).

If the level at universities is not that high then they should realise by now that a degree is no guarantee for a

capable employee, no? :(

Volunteering or joining a temple aren't really an option as I still have to pay things in Belgium (like furniture storage).

It definitely won't be easy...

P.S: glad this topic is 'civil' compared to the one in the general Thailand forum :D
