Reckon your out of luck as my own bank here, Kasikorn, will only change Bank of England notes.

I once showed them a Scottish note and they said no chance of changing with them and said this was the likely response elsewhere too.

They did go through their book of currency pics to check, I'll give them that, and there were only pics of the current BofE notes in there.

not good news, see here second last paragraph - http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/asia-oceania/thailand

it would seem like a trip out of the country.

Or he could ask someone from home to transfer money to him and pay them back when he gets home with the money he has if he can't change them in Thailand....Must be annoying though, not being able to change your money abroad, but a quick check before departing would have told the OP that changing Scottish and NI bank notes in Thailand could be a nightmare...

Why not call the British embassy, and ask for advice.

The UK government supervises the printing of these notes. So --------- their problem.

Not their problem at all what people do with them outside of the UK.

If he doesn't have alternative funds, he should get someone to wire some or find an Ulsterman going home who will do him a favour. Same problem with notes from Scotland, Jersey, IoM etc. No use to any exchangers overseas because they don't recognise them and can't sell them.

Wales do not, Ireland and Scotland do.
