Public warned against flu virus, another pandemic predicted

BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry is urging people to pay strict attention to their personal hygiene to cut down on their chances of catching the flu.

"There were signs of the 2009 flu virus in some areas during this year's flu season, along with some areas becoming hot spots," Dr Passakorn Assawasewee, director of the Department of Disease Control's Bureau of Epidemiology, said.

According to the bureau's most recent report, about 260 people developed flulike symptoms over the past two weeks, raising the number of infections this year to 8,442, with some 57 people dying from the typeA (H1N1) virus. The virus hit Thailand last April, infecting 30,336 people and killing 197 of them.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the end of the pandemic in July after it had spread to 214 countries and killed more than 18,449 people across the world.

Wow...big price difference. Early in the year I saw my local hospital offerring the regular flu shot, but they said they still didn't have a H1N1 flu shot.

The Kasamad Sciburin in Chiang Rai (Group hospitals should be the same) is offering the swine flu jab along with the regular one for 550 baht.A bargain if you want it.Its put into one jab so no worries about 2 pricks for the weak of heart!lol....

Regents International School, near Rama 9, closed its primary school this week with 22 cases of H1N1 so it is definitely here. I guess that's what the Doctor meant by 'signs'.

I was with an doctor yesterday in a hospital.

He sanitized the group computer mouse and keyboard AND tabletop,

that he shares with other MD's, before even looking for my chart on the computer.

He said 1-3 people with confirmed H1N1 come in every day here.

They come in, get tested, and it comes back positive.

He is not the general practitioner, but a specialist in another field,

but this is common knowledge for all docs.

I had my 'flu jab yesterday, which included an H1H1 component.

My wife and 4 yr old son tested positive for H1N1 (2009)at the weekend.

I have the same symptoms but tested negative.... For me its passed quite quickly but i won't be swimming or walking the dogs for a few more days.

My son who is an asthma sufferer sailed through it after high temp and congestion for 3 days.

My wifes friends 5 year old daughter is in an isolation ward in a Korat hospital with one collapsed and one congested lung.

Another thai friend called me from BKK to say his 8 year old has just been released from hospital after contracting it. -no further details.

Local hospital is full on with it at the moment.

So you pay your money and take your choice. It's definitily more prevalant this year and covered by thai media but not reported much in the english language papers.

Can't imagine why?
