Whats The Strangest Thing You'Ve Ever Seen Here?

9 years ago on my first visit to Thailand I was staying in Koh San Rd. Just left Gulliver's after a night on it, when this English lad came flying down the stairs of guesthouse across the street. Running across the road and stopping right in front of us and turning around as a young Thai lad came flying down the same stairs with a pool cue. The English lad protested "come on mate I've just had my ear bitten off". Sure enough his ear was gone. Anyway the Thai guy wasn't finished and started chasing him up the road and into the night.

The next morning we were in a taxi heading to the train station to continue our travels, all still wondering what happening in the end to the now one-eared lad. Low and behold as we were heading out of Koh San Rd we noticed a pissed off looking lad marching up the road with his head all bandaged up.

I didn't come to Thailand without respect nor research before my arrival, but seeing that certainly taught me something about Thailand first hand. Unfortunately at someone else's expense.

And you've never seen anything like that in your 'home' country? I would say you should get out more, but apparently you already have, but like so many other farang believe Thailand to be sprinkled with fairy dust and shit doesn't happen here also. Because most people smile (in so many different ways). PS the farang dckhead probably deserved it:lol:

Fish and beach chairs floating around on Patongs 2nd road on that dreadful day not knowing what the hel_l I'd just slept thru. Then seeing cars piled on top of each other and buses that had clearly been hurled 100's of yards from the road.

On a much lighter note, guys massaging you whilst taking a p!ss in club Xcyte in Pattaya.

a couple of years ago in a club in chiang mai (too ashamed to say what one) the massage guys TRYING to massage some skandinavian guy that's taking a pee. he turns round clocks one in the ear before 4 or 5 more come running in, everyone is now grabbing each other and it's about to kick off and the farang wisely shouts 'sorry, sorry' and 'let me buy you a beer' and it all finishes as quick as it starts!

must confess to never being comfortable with piece in hand and some guy trying to massage me!:(

My mother in law pawning her gold for me when I was skint .

twice for me. once when we bought our house in Bangkok and we needed furniture my MIL and FIL lent us 300k. these guys are not wealthy at all but had that in life savings. then about 4 months ago again, but this time she pawned her gold along with my wife to help get us by when we took over our small restaurant.

on more than one occasion she has helped out by pawning or selling valuable gold chains and diamond rings from trips to chinatown (yawalat). so that we could get all three of the businesses up and running. has also helped out with money requirement concerning visas, when i needed a cash boost.

shes not a wealthy person by any stretch of the imagination

The three of you And also to HuaHinFool;

The whole point isnt about family being family and that it is ok to borrow money from family only because they are family. Then you have a narrow and easy view of life and are probably going to hustle anyone for some cash on your way through life.

This is about the finacial status of the people you are borrowing from and what social system they live in. Look at all of you, potless and with no money. You were not able to make it in farang land and make some cash there. Why should anyone belive you could make some cash here? You have all failed in life in terms of gaining assets or save money to spend on a business for yourself. Most likely because you are not business orientated and also do not have the best control over personal expenses due over income.

And here it comes, what if your business or your life in terms of economic fails again and this time on lent money from not wealthy but a poor old thai mother and father in law. That would be a great situation for all wouldnt it? These not wealthy farmers or up country people that worked all their life and saved some money, but which you the white man couldnt do and now you re asking for their help. No, screw that, as I said, that is not cool.

Why did you not borrow money from your own family where you come from...Because no one wants to, because they know exactly how you are?

Why not borrow from friends where you come from that could live with aloss of some 200.000-500.000 baht... Because you dont have any that trusts you?

Why not through a financial institution in your home country or here... Because you dont have anything for that institution that would justify a loan from them.

Anyone going to live in another country and especially a country likeThailand should have the cash to make a sustainable life for themselves and their own money if they want to do some business and not ride on some old thai people to make it for them.

I am reading and one of you saying 160k in the bank and your wife cant touch it. If thats about all you ve got and and I would say your life is at a great risk. It takes you or any other from your beloved family only one motorbike crash and your hospital bills could double or triple that amount. I seriously hope that the reason for why you are so low on cash in your life is because you have the most expensive health insurrance covering for yourself and your whole family here. Otherwise you are running a huge risk of just being in this country.

You all remind me of the farangs that does not want to leave this country at any costs. Take what it takes and just hold on to being here no matter what. Shame on you. What you are doing is not cool and you are all running a much greater risk on a thai family than you should.

I have one word for you, it starts with Mup and ends with pet.

...gawp at the strange looking, big nosed, blue eyed farang! it's like being a minor celebrity:D

I know what you mean. Your attributes plus a bright red beard. I love when the kids take a look at me and start to cry. The parents and I always share a chuckle.

Was the OP about what I've seen in my home country? No, it was about Thailand, the strangest thing I have seen, this was the strangest. If you'd like to start another post about what strange things people have seen in their home country go for it, I'll post.

<deleted> are you talking about, "I would say you" "you already have" "like so many other farang" You don't know anything about me or my opinions, you ignorant muppet.

PS I could not give a toss about the guy, but again another fantastic assumption and display of your ineptitude

Years ago in Bangkok on the highway passing Don Muang I saw a pick up grossly overloaded with a huge elephant - it looked surreal!

Okay - Elephants on pickups in Thailand must be quite common.

But - while driving towards Kalgoorlie in West Australia (yes I know that's not in Thaiand - don't be so picky!) I could see in the distance a large black object with big arms waving on either side.

Turned out to be 2 elephants on the back of a truck - each facing opposite directions and waving them in the breeze. A circus on the move.

a street cleaner spent forty minutes yesterday trying to get my cat to pick the lottery numbers.

I mentioned this to my wife. She didn't even raise an eyebrow at it, then told me how the ladies in the village use a turtle to pick numbers. I didn't get it all, but they put a turtle in a box with numbers on pieces of paper. Somehow, a number is selected and off they go! And since none are the richer, I am guessing it doesn't work very well!

I once heard this story about an octopus picking world cup winners and it wasn't even in Thailand:

One of the strangest things I've seen here happened yesterday on Thong Lor.

A motorbike pulling a broken down songtaew. It was one of those small 4 wheeled tuk tuk type things.

The motorbike was wobbling all over the place and sadly I didn't have my camera.

Because I've been in Thailand off and on for over 14 years I've seen so many strange things that it's beginning to look normal to me. It is certainly strange by North American standards where everyone tries to follow the rules and regulations.

As a 70 year old man I found it strange to be included in a group of Thai teenagers who offered me their beer on a hot day along a mountain stream. That would NEVER happen in North America where teenagers basically shun all older people... including their parents. If I were to take photos and watch children playing sports in Canada the police would soon be around to pick me up... unless I was one of the parents.

Just riding around on my motorbike for one day in Thailand is enough to provide a year's worth of adventure stories by North American standards. It never ceases to amaze me what Thais can carry on a motorbike or small pickup truck. One day I was having breakfast on Loi Kroh road when the news man came by on his tiny motorbike. All I could see was a pile of papers on all sides of the bike, with just one tiny window opening in front so he could see where he was going. His arm came up at every delivery site and he flipped a rolled up paper in the direction of whoever it was for.

The twice daily MK staff dance

Needs to be seen to be believed. Would be classed as a crime against humanity in the West. Thai diners pretend nothing's happening while I don't know whether to die from laughter, pity or pure shame to be watching it from outside.

My nephew worked in MK in his Summer holiday. He said it was embarrassing at first, but customers seemed to like it and it calmed down the crying babies. So, he didn't mind doing that and amused himself with it. That's a good attitude.

The strangest thing I've seen when I was on bus 38 and a dog came in, sat under the seat by the door, took about 2-3 stops and then got off the bus like he knew where he was going. The fare collector said it was not the first time.

When I was a child growing up in Vancouver BC (1948) we had a pointer who did exactly the same thing. Our dog would go down to the corner where the bus stopped and catch a ride out to the military base in Point Grey. He would mooch food off the personel at lunch time and then catch the bus back to our home. We didn't know it was happening until one day the bus driver on that route told us about it. The driver didn't even know it was our dog until my sister and I took him with us on the bus to go to the beach.

Was walking along a bit south of Hua Hin a few years back when a farang passed me on a big bike, just chugging along quietly in top gear.

About 100mts behind came a cop on a 100cc bike crouched over the handles with the poor thing flat out screaming in mortal agony in "Hot persuit" as the yanks say.

Completly futile as he had no show of ever catching the big bike.

Samui residents circa 2003-2005 will remember the ferang woman in her early 30's who used to get naked and stand around the center of Chaweng at random times talking to her self. She was as mad as ten bears. Tourists used to stare at her open mouthed. The police mostly just left her alone which is a blessing as she was on a huge overstay. I remember once me and a pal sitting on deck chairs on the beach and she sat down opposite us and just said "hey, wassup" whilst completley naked. Her legs were hmm, spread wide open leaving her bits to just hang out. It was surreal.

Rumours used to fly around about her but the most accepted rumour was that she was a pianist by trade and came to samui for some time out, ventured down the road of yabba and mekong whisky and totaly lost the plot.

Not to sound crass, but she actualy had a real nice pair of boobs - pretty dam_n huge also.

I remember her too. Also the story she was a pianist. I saw her over about a three year period. She had her clothes on, luckily!!

Actually, that is my deep feelings (but with European standards :) ). On all my trips to Thailand, i've experienced much more interesting things than all years i spent in my home country. And that is why i'm planning to live in LOS.

And i was talking about it with a friend who is living in Cambodia, and he was feeling just the same way.
