Over the last few weeks I have noticed more & more thailand based tv travel shows on the tele in the UK & am amazed & annoyed at how ignorant most of these program makers are. :o

My husband (thai national) gets particully pissed off at them as most of them only show the seedy side of thailand like porn photgraphers, patpong nightlife & the freaks & geeks who go there to experience the "culture" of the full moon party or spend every night of their 2 week stay at the local nightlife spots then start spouting on camera about how the thai people are blah blah blah. :D

One was "tourist police" which featured the boys in brown in pattaya, jesus, what a bunch of morons they had to deal with & how rude those morons were, one german(?) guy had been mugged in a guest house & when the police returned to the scene of the crime with him & asked him what the guy looked like, he couldn't give a description & the police told him there was nothing they could do. He then started abusing the police & the apartment owner & telling them "me good farang, me bring lot money to thailand" (I couldn't make this up if I tried) I mean, what the ###### were they supposed to do, just arrest anyone to make thi guy happy? :D

The only good thing I have seen recently was a cooking show called The Thai Way, which was hosted by a thai man & his English wife who own the Chiang Mai cookery School, it's a nice show which shows a lot of local scenery & local people doing normal things, it also has some good recipes on there too :D

Thailand needs more programs like this as the point of this rant :D is that, no wonder people who have never been to Thailand have such a bad rep of the country & her people if this is all they see of it & I wonder who in the immigration/works department give permission for these shows to be made & if the program makers had been honest in the content? I am aware that that is part of thailand but it isn't the only thing it has to offer & it seems a shame that these few programs wil probably do more damage than any good ones made. :D

A handycam is not too expensive these days and since nobody will prevent you from making a good program give it a shot I would say :o

The Sky Travel channel seems to be endless repeats of the Full Moon Party and Bangkok Bound. Both of which are a terrible representation of Thailand and now well outdated. I did however see an interesting show on Chiang Mai, A Fork in Asia I think it was called. Generally speaking though, for those of us missing LOS, there's not much in the way of 'nice' reminders on UK TV.

Haven't seen those, but agree with your sentiments completely. The only shows I can recall seeing recently are ones on the mahouts/elephant farms (a small portion of Thailand) and on the recovery from the tsunami (very important IMHO, but again a small portion of Thailand).

Are we going to see you and your hubby at Battersea?

Cheers! :D

I might just get myself a decent camcorder meom & do just that, unfortunatly, only get 3 weeks a year but maybe in the future when we return we'll do a thailand road trip :D

I saw those bangkok bound & full moon party programs jack jones and they are exactly the ones I'm talking about, we saw one several months ago with an american guy at the meditation place outside of surat thani, going on about living like real thai people (in a wood hut with a contrete slab for a bed & a wooden pillow! :o Yeah right, cause they don't drive cars or own tv's or sleep on normal beds!

will possibly be at battersea spee, next week isn't it, on sunday??

Great. Maybe TV can start a videosection with short thai clips.

I agree boo the Thai way is very good. Have you watched any of the Globe trekker series? its on discovery travel and adventure. I have found these programs quite intresting. You should check them out :o

I totally agree.

I was also very annoyed at watching Bridget Jones - The Edge Of Reason - yet more idiotic stereotyping.

Bridget is jailed for drungs (yawn) and all the inmates are portrayed as stupid Thai women who are obsessed with Madonna songs.

The bar scene is portrayed with nauseating predictability and Hugh Grant sleeps with a prostitute who looks more like a Jamaican woman in the 70's.

It's always the same on TV.

Sex, drugs, and the food is quite nice. :o

On my yearly trips to UK never switch on the TV for exactly that reason, its a load of trash. Occasionally there are a few good programs of course but the majority of the popular stuff is rubbish. Same goes for the TV in Thailand most of the time.

A lot of programs are probably reflecting where the film crew like to go, so if that happens to be the full moon party then that's what you get to see!

Before he got to that meditation place, didn't that American guy sleep with a lady boy? I guess he had to clear that from his mind :o
