Hi,

I only know what I'm told by my landlord. He said TTT is folding, and being replaced by BBB. For some reason, they are changing all the cables (and it's reported they're doing a pretty bad job).

I haven't had any internet for 8 days, and according to my landlord, the manager of the project claims they have a lot of work, and we shouldn't expect to see any internet for several days yet to come.

Does anyone know what's really going on here?

Tomorrow, I'm planning on going out and buying a new telephone with EDGE technology or similarly equipped USB/EDGE device, so that I can at least have some internet (albeit slow) without having to go out to an internet shop. Does anyone know which is better with EDGE? DTAC or AIS?

Thanks,

EDGE is crap on both DTAC and AIS (but at least it works out the pack with AIS).

TTT broadband side is now 3BB, has been for some time (migration was seamless when I was with TTT at time of change), not sure if company split or sale, but 3BB is fine (against a low standard) where I am. Was using a cafe the other day in bangrak with 3BB again no problems, sounds like your landlord doesn't quite understand what is going on or is pulling your leg.

Dont bother trying to contact 3BB via any number listed (old or new), they simply dont work or always engaged, best to go down to office opposite tesco (near bookzine), the boss girl there is fast at sorting stuff out when you turn up in person (I think she's been sent there to sort the bad PR out).

don"t listen to the landlord she knows nothing , the service can't be interrupted for 8 days without prior notification, a simple call to 1530 and the problem will be sorted out usually the next working day.

i'm in bangrak internet is fine as it is 99.9% of the time.

Hi,

This is all very odd. I really don't like being w/o internet for 8 days - AND looking forward to the possibility of several more days of interruption. My landlord doesn't know a whole lot about computers, but is an Englishman, and tries his level best to stay on top of things. He's the best landlord I've had in nearly 8 years in Thailand.

I know he's been down to Tesco/Lotus to confront them about this. I never heard about the prior notification thing nor am I familiar with the 1530 telephone #.

I was in a situation where I had to use EDGE for a couple months. It generally sucked. I would clock download speeds of 4kb. Skyping was impossible. DTAC was 'better' than AIS, but that isn't saying a lot. I just wondered if things had improved in the 2 years since I haven't been using it. I know they had a lot more affordable packages that all disappeared. I understand that 3G for Thailand is a distant dream.

Hey! Thanks a lot for responding! Sounds like someone down at Tesco/Lotus TTT or 3BB has taken a 'dislike' to my landlord, and is putting him on the slow track. Oh, well.

Thanks again,

I do not know about EDGE, but I use CAT's CDMA for a good quality back up to my TOT ADSL.

TOT is pretty bad at the moment. Nil last week and it keeps timing out this week. 4 of my neighbours say the same thing.

CDMA is 6,000 baht from CAT at Nathon (take your passport) and is just over 800 baht per week for unlimited access. You get 3 months free.

It works everywhere in Thailand where there is decent mobile signal - except for Bangkok which will be coning on-line later.

It is slightly slower than TOT (when TOT works) and it does drop out now and again, but it is very reliable on the whole.

I switch from TOT to CDMA from about lunch time until all of the kids on Samui have finished playing on-line games. Then I go back to TOT.

Both DTAC and AIS do 'pay as you go' versions, but I hear that they are a bit slower.

Good luck

DTAC is cheaper and better than AIS although in Bangrak both are slow.....but then I could say the same for any internet here especially at busy times of day.

our TOT connection in bangrak has been pretty reliable until the last week and it has been out or useless for each day in the last week. i also use dtac data plan (199 baht for 50hrs per month) as a backup. no problems there apart from the fact that neighboring banana republics have 3g and this banana republic doesn't.

I have had a couple of problems with 3BB, BUT AFTER CALLING 1530 the problem has been corrected pretty quickly, simply call 3BB on 1530 give them your telephone number and they will test the line and tell you what the problem is,

Never had a problem getting through to 1530, normally very quick to answer but then again 1530 is not a free helpline.

find those dtac sim cards from The dtac shop in big c quite usefull. the dignal isn't too bad and the strength and you can use anywhere in any hotel in thailand.

TTT is 3BB is Triple T internet. They just keep changing their name. They may be replacing the cables because they are crap but not because they are folding.

Call 1530 and ask for someone that speaks English, I have never had difficulty getting through. Make sure you either call from your phone that uses the internet or have your customer number ready so they can check your line. And you can request a technician come out.

AIS sells a dongle for internet for about a thousand a friend told me, so you can put your SIM in there after signing up for an internet package with AIS.

Are you sure it's 800 baht per WEEK? or do you mean MONTH?

I am looking into getting one ofthese CAT CDMA aircards, but not if they are 800 per WEEK !!
