Thais do merit makings on Buddhist Lent

BANGKOK: -- Thai people in all parts of the country have joined merit making ceremonies to mark the three-month Buddhist Lent, which begins today.

A number of Thais in Bangkok and all other provinces began the good deed earlier this week by giving alms and offering necessities to Buddhist monks to be used during the Buddhist Lent.

Thursday night, they also gathered at temples to walk with lighted candles around the temples to mark the Asanha Bucha Day, the day before the beginning of the Buddhist Lent when the Lord Buddhist firstly preached the five ascetics who later became the 'first five Buddhist monks' after his enlightenment.

More Buddhist Thais from all walks of life, including children, teenagers and the elderly, have joined the merit making ceremonies, compared to those observed last year, according to TNA reporters.
