Ugly Altercation With Psycho Landlord

I've been in the same apartment for nearly 4 1/2 years (since June 2006), when the day before yesterday my landlord flew off the handle and told me to f***k off over something quite trivial. He was trying to blame me for problems with an aircon unit (long story) when he started to get angry and raise his voice for no apparent reason. He has this personality where he works himself into a frenzy over trivial things. He spends a lot of time shouting at his staff (Thai and Farang), and now he's trying it with me - but I'm not going to take this. When I calmly asked him to lower his voice, he started mouthing off and told me to f***k off.

He had tried this 2 years ago after I asked him when he was going to install a hot water heater he had promised 3 months earlier. He told me I'm welcome to leave. I've paid this prick 1.17 million baht in rent and was likely to stay another 5 years at least. I don't like moving and when I'm settled I stay put. I've never broken anything and I'm what you would consider a model tenant. The last place I rented in Australia I stayed for 15 years.

Anyway, if there are any landlords out there who are interested in a long term, trouble free tenant with wife (no babies and not planning for any), I'm looking for a nice, furnished condo or apartment with all the bells & whistles in the following areas: Pratamnak Hill, Jomtien, South and Central Pattaya or the near end of Naklua.

I want a good deal, that is why I would prefer to deal directly with a Farang owner rather than paying commission to a real estate agent. Right now I'm paying 21,000 per month, but could go up or down on that depending on what I see but I am fussy because I will be staying long term.

...and please, no flaming here. If you feel the need to flame, PM me and I'll entertain you.

I once had a similar Thai Landlord in Bangkok. He was a retired doctor, spoke excellent English and was very polite to me.His wife was a Khunying.

One day he came round to check on some plumbing problems and suddenly started screaming at me, abusing me and farangs in general. I had done absolutely nothing to warrant such a tirade.

It turned out that he was an alcoholic and was subject to periodic rages. His family were embarrassed at what had happened (they had witnessed it) and I never saw him again. I just dealt with the Kunying who was very nice.

So maybe alcohol was behind your landlord's behaviour, but it still doesn't excuse what happened.

Good luck with your home hunting. One way to beat the agents is to go around yourself to prospective condo blocks and see what condos are up for rent. There are usually signs on the wall or you could ask at reception.

Thanks for that. I'll have a look around the areas on my scooter.

Yes, you may have pinpointed the cause of his problem. He does drink a lot and he's a really nice guy when he's drunk. He's a total prick when he's sober, but I hardly ever see him, which is probably the reason I've managed to persevere for over 4 years.

wow.more than 600 dollars a month?i pay 500 a month for a 93 acre farm in canada and think a bit much

It's quite low rental in the area as it is a 2 bedroom place. A lot of places go for high 20's, 30's and up.

I thought I should mention here, I must have a fully furnished place and I'm not interested in studio apartments/condos. It must have at least 1 bedroom. 2 would be a definite plus, but I know they are rare in the lower rental price range.

One thing about my current apartment, it's tight for space. I need space, so over 50m2 would be nice.

I have just moved out of a beautiful, one bed, 8th floor condo which has unrestricted view of the sea and islands.

But you pay for that kind of sea view,in a totally secure landscaped area, complete privacy and first class amenities. The owner actually wanted 40k but I knocked him down to 35k

One year was enough though and I have now moved back to the 'Darkside' into a nice, 3 bed fully furnished villa with a good sized pool and gardens, 1 minute walk from Mabprachan Lake - all for 25k per month.

I think there are some good deals out there on houses (the one I leased used to rent for 60K) but condos are probably holding their rental value fairly well. But there are always exceptions if you look hard enough.

Sounds like nice place to live, but unfortunately it's way over my budget.

"He does drink a lot and he's a really nice guy when he's drunk."

invite him for a drink ( or 3) before discussing anything

I've thought about that, but he won't drink during business hours.

why not invite the landlord on here to respond so that everyone can hear his side of the story...there's 3 sides to every story as they say

Good idea. PM me for my landlord's contact details and you represent his interests on here.
