It was called MONKEY. It had the above characters as you said. Also Sandi and Tripitaka. Ah! When i was a lad! He used to keep his stick behind his ear and used to whistle for his cloud.

That's right, MONKEY. About a year ago I saw something on Thai TV that was almost identical to the series.

Monkey when confronted by a group of thugs; "I can beat 100 of you guys"

Quiet voice from back of the group of thugs; "Ahhh..but what if there was 101 of us?"

I'd love to see that series again. :o

Hope this helps

Monkey !

In the Worlds before Monkey,

Primal chaos reigned, Heaven sought order.

But the Phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown.

The four worlds formed again and yet again,

As endless eons wheeled and passed.

Time and the pure essences of Heaven,

The moistures of the Earth,

And the powers of the Sun and the Moon

All worked upon a certain rock - old as Creation,

And it magically became fertile.

That first egg was named Thought,

Tathagata Buddha, the Father Buddha,

Said, 'With our thoughts we make the world.'

Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch,

from it then came a stone Monkey.

The nature of Monkey was irrepressible!

DVD News!!

Just released: Monkey! - The Complete Series is available from Amazon.co.uk (£74.99)

Why ?

Because...

I loved Monkey! first time around, and I've just recently had the opportunity to watch it again. I can remember rushing home from school to watch it.

Monkey! (known as Saiyuuki in Japanese) was first shown on British TV in the late 1970's. Based on an epic Chinese tale. It's mixture of comedy, Asian mysticism and at least one fight scene every episode. It tells the tale of a Buddhist priest's (Tripitaka) quest to bring the Greater holy scriptures from India to China.

Tripitaka's journey is equally helped and hindered by his 4 "holy" disciples - Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy and a horse called Yu-Lang (that's actually a dragon).

By today's standards the production values were poor and it isn't very politically correct. However, I just loved every minute of it!

So, for all those who bruised knuckles and blackened eyes reenacting the Monkey! fight scenes with broomhandles- This site is for you!

Looks like you'll have to use emule or try buying it somewhere.

However, if you do develop a primate fetish, I have some good leads for you. :o

Was it originally known as"The Watermargin", or am I thinking of a different series altogether?

"The Wartermargin" was a different show all together, out well before "monkey" I used to watch " The Wartermargin" simular sort of thing but "monkey" was more comedy

"Tales of the Watermargin" was my all time TV favourite.

That was about a Chinese rebel hiding in the swamplands and fighting the evil tyrant . It was nothing like Monkey.

Between Watermargin and Monkey there was another series called, I think,

Tripitaka and that was a more serious progran with the same characters but actually tried to convey some Bhuddhist doctrines.
