Tight security in Songkhla after railroad bombing

SONGKLA, Oct 5 – Security measures in the southern province of Songkhla on Tuesday tightened after a bombing at a railway safety fence injured four persons in Chana district Tuesday morning, Songkhla governor Vinyu Thongsakul said.

The first three wounded were police officers of Chana Police Station, Pol Sgt-Maj Kasem Kanchanarat, Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Erb Kaewkwanphet and Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Narin Maneechoti.

The other victim, Kittichai Pinsuwan, is a state railways official also wounded in the explosion.

Currently, Pol Sgt-Maj Kasem and Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Erb are hospitalised for medical treatment while Pol Sen Sgt-Maj Narin Maneechoti, only slightly injured, has returned home for a rest.

In addition, the bomb destroyed an officer’s motorcycle parked near the crime scene, said Pol Maj-Gen Chonsit Wattanawarangkul, commander of Songkhla police, who rushed to investigate the scene with the governor.

According to the initial investigation, the presumed bombers hid their homemade bomb in dense shrubbery some 20 metres from a railway staff booth and triggered the explosive by cellphone.

In response to the recent bomb explosion, Mr Vinyu instructed local security officials to be on high alert and to intensify security measures in the provincial seat and in Hat Yai district.

The governor said the bombing is the first incident in the province since two years ago. (MCOT online news)
