Powerful blast hits building in Nonthaburi, killing 3

A powerful blast rocks a five-story apartment building in Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong district on Monday evening, killing at least three and injuring many others.

Police claimed the explosion broke out in a room on the second floor of the Saman Mettha Apartment building at about 6am.

The explosion severely destroyed the second and first floors of the buildings.

The impact of the explosion caused panic that the building could be collapsed.

The injured people were rushed to hospitals nearby. Some of them were said to be thrown out of the building in the blast.

Owner of the building; Samarn Bunprasert, told police that he did not know who rented the room where police believed that the blast started.

The explosion happened hours after the state of emergency was extended in the province as well as Bangkok, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakarn.

Nonthaburi has been a stronghold of Pheu Thai MP Apiwan Wiriyachai who is also deputy House Speaker. Apiwan is a leading red shirt leader who took stage several times to cristicise Abhisit government during the April and May Crisis.

BANGKOK, October 5, 2010 (AFP) - An explosion at an apartment building north of Bangkok left two people dead and several others injured Tuesday, but the cause was unknown, police said.

The blast occurred at about 6.00 pm (1100 GMT) in the Bang Bua Thong district of Nonthaburi Province, according to a local police official.

"We still don't know the cause of the explosion. Two storeys of the mansion collapsed," said Police Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Hussakul.

The blast came hours after Thailand extended a controversial state of emergency in Nonthaburi and three other provinces, including Bangkok, in the wake of deadly street protests and a series of grenade blasts in the capital.

A rescue worker told Nation TV the blast occurred "inside" the Samarn Metta mansion. (on 2nd floor of the 5-storey building) /via @tulsathit

Other reports said the explosion occurred "outside" but severely damaged the building. /via @tulsathit

A big blast on the second floor.

Possibility it could be the bomb makers themselves.

Unless it was a personal thing it hardly seems likely that anyone would take enough explosives to the second floor to cause a big blast.

Anyway condolances to the familys of the dead, a speedy recovery to the injured and hope the building owner had insurance.

Probably a bomb factory that blew up. I guess that Takki Shinegra and his Red Shirts can add the losses to their long list of members lost in their war against the thai government.

Let´s all hope that the bombers will be re-born as soi-dogs.

A number of possibilities spring to mind.

First there is the chance it was a gas cylinder faulty or affected in some other way thus causing it to explode.

Secondly . perhaps it was an explosive device in transit which again due to carelessness in handling or assembly possible bomb detonated somewhat quicker than anticipated.

Thirdly , there is or was the possibility that the apartment block was being used as an assembly area, again carelessness would indeed cause the explosives to detonate.

Fourth, well it is possible that an old score was being settled, although in my experience in the twenty years I have lived here the main target is usually the only victim in such cases.

My personal view is that possibly the apartment was being used as assembly plant or a mini arsenal. explosives can be very temperamental in a warm humid climate and the current weather conditions may well have caused the explosives to become unstable and thus led to the explosion. the damage is far beyond that one would expect from a solitary charge of a explosive device,.

However it may well be a moot point if we are aver actually informed as to the true facts of the matter.

Personally, I think the faction involved in the political situation have better facilities than an apartment building for assembling bombs. I think a lot of people would notice the comings and goings and movement of things in and out.

As a target, it's not wise to blow up the masses if your trying to win the hearts and minds.

A meth lab, maybe??

Two killed, four injured in Nonthaburi apartment bombing

NONTHABURI, Oct 5 – At least two persons were killed and four others were wound in a bombing at an apartment in Nonthaburi on Tuesday evening.

Rescue workers are inspecting the site where the bodies lay under the debris after a bomb exploded at around 6.30pm at the Samanmettha Mansion, a six-story apartment in Bang Bua Thong.

Concrete walls of rooms at the corner on the first and second floors were damaged. Four people were sent to hospital.

Some residences near the apartment were damaged. The cause of bombing is still unknown.

Nonthaburi is one of four provinces where the state of emergency is still in place.

The Thai Cabinet on Tuesday extended the state of emergency imposed in Bangkok and its three adjacent provinces, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani since April for another three months, to maintain law and order following reports of continuing disturbances in the areas.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva last week lifted the state of emergency in three northeastern provinces of Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima and Udon Thani. (MCOT online news)

A propane tank explosion is indeed the likely culprit. The other possibilities are a business dispute with the owner or one of the tenants, or a bomb intended for another target (aren't the EC and Thaicom both up in Nonthaburi?) could have gone off prematurely. However, I the size of the blast and the accompanying fire sounds like an LPG tank going off to me.

The EC & Thaicom sites are still a fair way from the site of the suspected bomb.

Exactly, let's wait and see, but usually bombs reported in Thailand barely manage to damage the motorbike they are planted in, very rarely scorch the pavement, and are less effective than fireworks at Loy Kratong.
