The Island

In the spirit of recent posts along the same lines, I'd be interested to hear what people thought of The Island? I went to see it at the weekend and was pleasently surprised. Interesting story line, plenty of good action and - oh my god - Scarlett J looking absolutely stunning.

By far the best of the so-called 'blockbuster' movies this year and a country mile better than the disappointing War of the Worlds, Batman, Star Wars 114 and Mr and Mrs Jones.

Best movie of the last couple of months for me though? The Machinist.

I saw it last night and think it is extremely thought provoking. It seems that many of the older sci-fi movies were preludes of what the world has become today. Also the whole cover-up of contamination on the outside world and the promise of "the island" seems to reflect quite accurately the many fibs that govenments tend to feed their citizens in modern societies today in order to keep economies rolling.

I especially loved those flying motorcycle thingies in the LA scenes.

Good plot, storyline. Although it is science fiction it is still in the realm of the possible. Raises many questions about the ethics of cloning humans. There were some areas which were weak, such as how can two people escape so much injury in such a short amount of time, and the part where the client and clone (Ewan Mcgregor) are held at gunpoint.....The first thing the contract killer would have done is check for the id Tattoo on the wrist.....

I particularly liked Steve Buscemis' role, as a Hot Rodder, heavy drinking, rebel engineer.

Jimmy, it's hard to explain too much of the plot of the machinist without giving away the whole story. But suffice to say it's main character (an incredibly skinny Christian Bale who lost 20kg to do the role, and it shows) is a lathe worker evidently suffering from some kind of major mental breakdown caused by some kind of traumatic recent event. he's being pursued by a sinister character who seems to know too much about him. fantastically atmospheric camerawork, gritty feeling to the movie. Good dialogue and some good supporting roles, especially 'hooker with a heart' jennifer jason leigh.

Cheers for that mate. I'll add that one to the list to see as well and thanks for the link there Bendix much appreciated :D It does seem to be difficult these days to find a really good movie and I definately get a bit tired of all the hype from these hollywood blockbusters that turn out to be nothing like I thought so any info on a good one is.....well good :o

Haven't seen "The Island" yet but wanted to on virtue of Scarlett Johansson alone. She is adorable and yet so young.

I bought the Machinist DVD. It reminded me very much of the movie "Memento". It was pretty good I thought. Christian Bale gave a dedicated performance.

I really quite enjoyed Memento TRIPxCORE. Really made you concentrate to follow it. A well thought out movie. One more reason to see Machinist :o

Really enjoyed 'The Island'. Actually went there to see 'WOW' but it had already started and all the other movies were in Thai.

At first I thought it might be a modern version of 'Logan's Run' (which I enjoyed). Myself and the missus were impressed with the story and the visuals. Great sound at the the Major Cineplex. :o

Saw The Island and WOTW in Penang. I thought The Island was jolly good fun, and its subject reminded me of the movie Coma, if you remember that. Great action scenes and well paced. Yeah, a couple of plot holes but still most enjoyable...

As for WOTW, well, just don't. They even changed the old Richard Burton intro line from "Minds immeasurably superior to ours..." to some other rubbish - couldn't have the audience feeling they were inferior! And Tim Robbins "Underground tunnels" character weren't nothing like David Essex's from the Jeff Wayne version! I did think the plot could have been beefed up a bit, considering it's a century since the book came out. A quick production job and money in the bank for Spielberg and Cruise, eh.

I like Buscemi, he steals the show in almost any movie, including this one- Like Kevin Spacey, he's one of those rare actors who makes any role interesting, memorable.

Off topic, remember his bit part telling the Mariachi story to the barkeep & co in Desparado? Brilliant! Come to think of it, Cheech Marin had a great bit part in there as well :o
