Drug smuggling Iranian arrested at Suvarnabhumi carrying 3 kilos of ‘ice’

BANGKOK, Oct 8 – An Iranian man was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport for smuggling three kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine also known as ‘ice,’ worth nearly Bt10.5 million (US$350,000) into the kingdom, a senior Thai customs officer said on Friday.

Saeid Golestani, 25 year-old Iranian national, was apprehended at the arrival terminal of Thailand’s main international airport Thursday evening, according to Wisan Wuthisaksilp, Principle Advisor on Development of Customs Control System.

When Mr Golestani was passing through the terminal, customs officers asked him to stop to inspect his baggage check as well as a microwave oven which he carried, bypassing an X-ray scanner.

A scan test found a package of crystal meth in a plastic bag with a total weight of three kilos hidden inside the microwave oven, Mr Wisan explained.

The illicit drug was valued at $350,000.

Initial investigation found the suspect flew from the Syrian capital of Damascus via the United Arab Emirates’s Abu Dhabi to Thailand.

Initially, Mr Golestani was sent to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further investigation.

In the first seven days of October, the customs department has registered two cases of ‘ice’ smuggling at the main international airport totaling about 5.65kg worth about Bt19.8 million (some $658,000).

From October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010, the Customs Department made arrests in 109 cases of all kinds of drug smuggling, worth nearly Bt730 million ($24.3 million).

Seventy of the cases were 'ice' smuggling with a total weight of over 128 kg valued at more than Bt450 million (over $15 million) in value. (MCOT online news)

In order to reduce the number of people trying to bring in dangerous drugs, Thailand should impose the death penalty and or life sentence like many countries are doing. The law is here in Thailand, but unfortunately not being imposed properly.

Look at how Singapore and Malaysia handle drug dealers. Manatory death or life sentence if caught, depending on the amount of illegal drugs being brought in. Thailand should learn from these two countries if the Thai Government is serious in stamping out drug being brought into Thailand.

good call. Lets kill some more. Its not like the war on drugs hasn't already killed enough. You should read some case studies on Portugal and the effects of De-criminalization.

Great idea! What other crimes should we kill people for?

I think that drug mules that are forced to do it, or do it out of sheer desperation should be beheaded in public. Set examples to people who it will affect in no way.

An eye for an eye makes us both blind.

I wish I had a red button .....

Obviously the death penalty doesn't help anything or anybody in my opinion .

I agree with strong punishment , its wrong and should handled with according the law ,

but these are small fish , they are stupid and ignorant morons , the big fish should be heavily punished .

Unfortunately there are also innocent people in jail , thats the first reason not to accept the death penalty , especially when a fair trial in many cases seem almost none to nothing . Those other countries you are talking about should look at Thailand , not the other way , and Thailand could learn much from the West( humanitarian reasons ) , prisoners are treated very badly , we are not living in the middle ages anymore , or are you ?

You're right, not Middle Ages, more like a few centuries B.C with some countries still practicing 'stoning'

Yeah, killing with machines and unmanned drones is the way its done in our modern world. Thanks Christ for these (humanitarian aseptic ) inventions. No more getting dirty hands from the unclean stones.

Somehow there is a difference between a punishment and a war situation. What we were discussing here is the punishment part. Let's not fight about that ;)

They're not smuggling Ice, they're smuggling microwaves.

I remember another Iranian getting caught with a microwave full of ice. Is this a rerun of old news or are they really that stupid?

Is this real or MCOT keep running the same story over and over. This is ridicules. Why only Iranian bringing ice. Or maybe they don’t know what is the process?

Maybe there's more to it than meets the eye. After all, you'd think the this kind of news would have filtered through to the general Iranian public by now.

We've now had a steady succession of Iranians being arrested for supposedly smuggling large quantities of illegal drugs into Thailand, yet despite the publicity, it continues to happen. It's almost as if the poor guys who get caught for this offence don't actually know anything about it.

So maybe it has more to do with Iran eliminating its dissidents by getting them locked up, or put to death even, in Thailand. "Here you mate, nice new microwave oven to take with you on vacation". "They don't have microwaves in Thailand, so you're going to need it". Whoever plants these gifts on them omits to inform them what the unit contains.

Or do I have an overactive imagination?

these kind of people are with no access to international news. Everything is censored. They even maybe held in safe-houses before they send them one by one. And yes, jihad don't care if they get busted as long as the destroying substances get through.

Wonder if they are into other countries as well. Strange that only Thailand now is facing this situation.

I know in the past Japan used to have this problem with Iranians.

Guess you are the one with a limited access to selected news you read with a narrow minded view. It isn't only Thailand that face a raise of drug smuggling Iranians, that happen also in other countries. And these arrests are in the news in Iran and these drug problems are handled by the Iranian police forces in a similar fashion like everywhere else in the world where drug use and drug dealing is illegal.

And that isn't a Muslim conspiracy against the rest of the world and it isn't a jihad thing of selling poison to 'disbelievers'. What a nonsense.

Your kind of people must be watching fox news and alike pretty much. iamright?

Friday night drunk or is your brain(got one?) on the same set also at the other days of the week?

Interesting type of conversation you try to have. One wonders if you have friends who like to receive this type of verbal abuse ?

Are these arrests in the news in Iran ? I would be surprised, even 9/11 is positioned as US government conspiracy. Prove me wrong, or prove you're right. The truth will enlighten you :)

Jeez, it seems like a couple of times a week, an Iranian is getting busted for trying to smuggle in some ice.

yes, and Thailand isn't alone:

Man swallows 1.4 Kilograms of methamphetamine

An Iranian man is in custody in Auckland after what is thought to be the largest seizure of drugs ever found inside a human body in New Zealand.

The man had swallowed 1.4kg of methamphetamine, packed into 185 small latex "pellets".

He was arrested at Auckland International Airport a fortnight ago after coming to New Zealand from Iran and travelling through Dubai.

-----------------------------------------------

I was wondering when the Iranians might start smuggling ice into Thailand via that internal method instead of inside of microwave ovens and luggage... but then I saw the Lithuanians have already done so (as the same article continues):

-----------------------------------------------

His arrest came a day after two Lithuanian men traveling from Thailand were found with 645g and 400g in 77 pellets and 105 pellets in their bodies, the Weekend Herald reported.
