ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- A moderate earthquake rattled the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on early Monday morning, seismologists and witnesses said.

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake at 2.44 a.m. local time (2144 GMT Sunday) was centered approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Islamabad. It struck about 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Pakistani television reported that residents in the region fled their homes when the earthquake struck, but did not immediately report any damage or casualties.
