CULIACAN, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Eight policemen were killed and three others were injured on Monday after suspected drug cartel gunmen ambushed them in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa, authorities said.

A police convoy was ambushed on a highway that connects the state capital of Culiacan with the city of Guamuchil, near the town of Cerro Bola, according to the prosecutor's office in Sinaloa state.

The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time when 11 federal and state agents patrolling the highway in three police cars were attacked by around 30 suspected drug cartel gunmen who were traveling in several vehicles.

Among those killed are five agents of the state preventive police and three from Navolato's municipal police.

Sinaloa is home to one of Mexico's most powerful cartels, the Sinaloa cartel, which is fighting for the control of drug routes into the United States with other criminal gangs.
