Several soldiers killed after blast at Iranian military base

TEHRAN, IRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Several soldiers were killed on Monday and some others were injured after an explosion at an Iranian military training base in the western province of Lorestan, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

The Imam Ali military base is located in Khoramabad, the provincial capital of Lorestan. Originally, it was reported that the blast did not kill any service members but later reports indicated that several members of the elite Revolutionary Guards were killed.

The explosion was apparently caused by accident but further details were not immediately released. Firefighters and rescue teams were deployed to the area to assist injured soldiers. Some of them were transported to local hospitals in Khoramabad.

Last month, a bomb killed 12 people and injured 80 others in the city of Mahabad which authorities blamed on "anti-revolutionary" militants backed by Iran's foreign enemies. Days later, Revolutionary Guards killed 30 individuals allegedly involved in the bomb blast.

Last week, five Iranians, including four members of the security forces, were killed and nine injured when gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in Kurdistan province, a region plagued with frequent clashes between Kurdish rebels and Iranian security forces.
