Nationwide Building Society

Featured Replies

Just a heads up for those of you that bank with Nationwide Building Society.

From December looks like you will need their card reader to log in to the online banking, but only for those with the Flex Acc.

Technically, you don't need their card reader - any UK bank card reader will work just fine.

I was sent one soon after I opened my account and told I would need this device, never used it and its in a box 6000 miles away. what a waste of nationwides money.

Then I would suggest that you get it sent here to you,if you will want to access your Nationwide account after December.

The card reader will replace your 'memorial word' and pin number when you access....without it you might find that your money will just stay untouched...just when you need it.

I've used mine many times now for transferring money to Thailand and within UK; also for changing personal details. It's very easy to use. There should be no problem in having one sent to Thailand as the reader itself is useless without internet access to your account ie password and username, and the pin number of your card. Nationwide sent mine out in the normal post.

Have both the nationwide and the Barclays card readers ,use them regularaly ,how anyone can do their banking without it i dont understand ,dont they ever transfer money?

One big problem is that Nationwide will NOT send any post to Thailand so its going to be difficult for us living Thailand to get hold of a card reader. Even if you have a card reader do you have to take it along to the ATM here in Thailand every time you want to withdraw money from your flexi account. I have an additional problem is that my flexi-account debit card expires next June so l am not sure what to do about this. The only thing l could do is get my sister to DHL or FED-Ex the card reader and debit card to me here. Expensive but no choice. Any other suggestions would be appreciated?

Whilst we are on the subject of Nationwide ,I would be pleased if anyone knows of another Banking group which issues a fee free debit card for use in Thailand, without too many account opening conditions ,such as mininmum balances, etc, etc.

As you are probably aware Nationwide is set to raise their charges on 1st November:2% buying goods and services and a further Pound for cash withdrawals.

This means for all of us a real "hammering" on future card transactions ,when you also take into consideration the low exchange rate Baht/Pound,that is.

Any views much appreciated.

I saw recently on a forum here on TV that Halifax are doing some speacial deals. Suggest you do a search. Yes Nationwide are becoming like a greedy bank but us ex-pats do not have a lot of choice

After all the changes Nationwide have made, I have now gone and opened a Halifax Acc, they tell me it’s still only £9.50 to transfer online to my Thai Acc.

I realised that I had no back up plan if Nationwide block my Acc or I lost my cards.

I like the security of the Nationwide card reader for getting my cash, Halifax don’t have this.

While we are still in the UK we will be doing a test transfer over the next few weeks when the Acc if finalised,

then in December compare this with using my Nationwide card at the Thai bank over the counter, this will be based on £1200 as this is the amount we usually transfer each month from my pension.

Obviously the more or less you transfer as a bearing on the costs incurred.

If the pound falls anymore I will Have to reduced the wifes pocket money
