Hi Thai experts :o

How would I say, "I want to take advantage of this situation"

How about this - ผมอยากเบียดเบียนสถานการณ์นี้?

Wow my typing is getting better, only took 10 minutes :D 5 of these must have been trying to find the garan or whatever it is called.

I myself have wondered this situation before. So I just consulted the เมีย and got a satisfactory conclusion

To take advantage of could be said many ways depending on the context.

If it is an intoxicated girl, and you want to take advantage of the situation, you could use

As in Chokchai is at the club and eyes provocative Pinky stumbling over herself to grab another drink from her glass, he might tell his friend Gitipon

That girl is wasted, so I’m gonna (take the inititiative to) take her to the hotel!!

But if the taking advantage is in a positive usage as in taking advantage of an opportunity, you could use

As in Suriporn has always wanted to be a movie star. When she meets Khun Jintima at MBK who tells her she should come to an audition at her studio. As Jintima gives Suriporn her namecard, she might say,

A beautiful girl like yourself should take advantage of this opportunity. If you call me, you surely won’t regret it.

From what I understand, this เบียดเบียน has a slightly different meaning as in putting a burden on someone/thing else..but I still don’t have a complete grasp on it to explain it with an example. I’ll leave that for someone else.

Yeah I believe it to be different too.

Thanks for your input GW. :o

I never thought of that, and I think I have heard this being used before - when a vendor was thinking that as I being a farang he would ฉวยโอกาส

In a situation like that you could use เอาเปรียบ too, which is "take advantage of" in the more negative sense (like exploit).

For the meaning "seize the opportunity" without negative connotations, you can also use "theu ookaat" (the same "theu" as in to carry in your hands).

Right, I agree with you. As far as I understand it there's different levels of words here:

เอาเปรียบ 'exploit' - Definitely negative context

ฉวยโอกาส 'grab/snatch the opportunity' - Slightly rough sounding to me, but seems to be very commonly used. Goes well with GW example of I think. (Though shouldn't that be กู not ผม GW ? :o )

ถือโอกาส or (less common) คว้าโอกาส 'take your chance, seize the opportunity' - Normal words, either positive or negative depending on the context.

I don't think I've heard someone use จับโอกาส yet, so I don't know about that.

Be interested to read others opinions though.

เอาเปรียบ is only used in the sentence of ' to take advantage of someone'

For example;

The boss always takes advantage of the underling.

ฉวยโอกาส , ถือโอกาส is used in the sentence of ' to take advantage of something'

For example;

Don't take advantage from this situation.

"I want to take advantage of this situation"

For this sentence, the best translation should be "ผมต้องการจะใช้ประโยชน์จากสถานการณ์นี้

Another example;

As we are discussing about this phrase, I'd like to take advantage of this situation to blame someone here who often use the vulgar language. :o

Yoot, it's called immaturity, one day, perhaps not soon, the nomad will grow up.

Or how about this example:

พวก สตอพ อีแบมปะ และ (เฉพาะๆ) บ้านนรกชอบจับโอกาสแก้ลงผม เพราะอะไรก็ไม่รู้แต่คิดว่าน่าจะเกียวกับความริษยาละมั่ง

as in

Stop, Ebamba, and (especially) Bannarok like to take (advantage of) the opportunity to pick on me. I'm not sure why, but I'm guessing it has to do with envy :o:D:D :D
