NHSO wants to use smart cards for health services

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) eyed on making the NHSO member cards into smart cards with a microchip or a magnetic strip containing the cardholders' medical history, entitled welfare and pension fund distribution information.

Expressing that this idea would prevent identity theft cases, Labour Minister Chalermchai Srion said Monday that NHSO was negotiating with hospitals under its scheme to use these new cards in the same manner of the universal healthcare members' usage of Thai ID cards at all hospitals.

Chalermchai said NHSO would separate serious illnesses with high treatment costs such as cancer from the per-head subsidy, so the first-admitting hospitals would transfer the serious disease patients to the center hospitals, which would reimburse the treatment costs directly with NHSO. The agency would also cancel the system requiring its subscribers to pay for emergency medical bills by themselves and later submit the receipts to reimburse the money. He said that such changes would be in effect from April 2011.
