Group urges UN to probe allege right violations of foreign workers by Thai authorities

The trans-national worker advocating network Monday urged the United Nations (UN) to investigate the alien workers' right violations in Thailand by ways including that officials allegedly sold to-be-repatriated workers to human traffickers on a boat in between Ranong and Burama's Song Island.

Ahead of the UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon's visit to Thailand today (Oct 26), the group issued a letter calling UN to probe and make recommendations to Thai government on the matter. They also asked Thai government to stop arresting alien workers pending this probe and to open a new session of immigrant worker registration to tackle labor shortage.

Citing news that about human right violations from the policy to arrest and repatriate immigrant workers who didn't submit to the nationality identification process, the group claimed that some officials put the workers in a camp controlled by the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) opposite to Tak's Mae Sot district so the workers had to pay a ransom of Bt2,500 to be released back to Thailand and that some Burmese workers, who were able to pay for their release, were re-sold to human trafficker on boats in Ranong. They said they had alerted Thai premiere in July but the government didn't do anything.

Local phu yai's would probably agree. It's only about helping those poor Burmese with work and make a meagre profit themselves to cover their expenses. If they can do with their own countrymen, why not with Burmese as well ?
