Pattaya Monorail protests intensify

PATTAYA: -- Protests against plans for the controversial Pattaya Monorail Network are intensifying. Khun Surat, who is leading the protesters, organized a street parade beginning under the overpass leading to the Bali Hai Port at the south end of Pattaya Third Road on Wednesday afternoon. I reckon there could be far more than a pathetic 200 out on the streets if it was reported that vested interests had successfully blocked the monorail project.

As a visitor I liked the baht bus service and I'm sure it would carry on in some form on that main drag route (for 10 baht I wouldn't be walking 5 minutes to a station in the hot season), but the prospect of them being forced to find a broader range of routes (and perhaps a better quasi-taxi service) is appealing.

I'm sure the other threads on this subject have said it before but I can't see how this project will ever get off the ground unless they force up the price of the baht buses well in advance to achieve an economic fare structure for the new mode. Pity - the baht buses are super cheap and easy but they do strangle the hel_l out of the centre and people should be paying more to compensate for their environmental impact.

"Mr. Surat Mekawarajun (Banglamung Culture Congress Chairman) added that market research conducted by Chotjinda Muchell Consultant ltd., the project consultant, indicating that most locals were in favour of a rapid transport system was flawed, as the majority of respondents were baffled by the academic terminology employed".

From the PDN article http://www.pattayadailynews.com/en/2010/10/28/locals-protesters-voice-concern-over-sky-train-project/

They must have had a wander round City Hall to do their market research, because i have yet to meet anyone that thinks this is nothing more than a joke!!!!

The simple answer to Pattayas traffic problems is to take half the Baht Busses off the road with immediate effect, problem solved, there you go now Mr Consultant / Market researcher, take note!! Free flawless advice!!
